state ref with stock muffler w/upgraded 2.5" piping
i got pulled over for unsual noise and i have to go to state ref. you guys think i can pass leaving the 2.5" piping? Or should i return it back to stock piping?
it would be best to put it back to sock so it wouldnt be so hard on the first try! each reschedule is another 2 weeks and thats another 2 weeks of not driving!
If you just pay the ticket off it will remain open. Meaning if a cop pulls behind runs your plates and sees a open ticket he can site you for the same thing and you fork out another $115 bucks. Trust me just get a legal exhaust and take it to the ref get his approval, that way if you get pulled over again you just show him the letter from the ref.
i thought u cant pay the ticket until you have proof of the state ref to clear you....but 2.5in pipe with stock exhaust make very lil noise...juss swap back that stock muffler and it all good...
You could also get a resonator that would decrease the db level. When you go to the ref they just measure db lvl @ wot and idle.. if that passes under 92db then they will write off the ticket as a fix it. I live in the area of SJ so i know the cops are *****.. i'm sporting an Apexi ws2 and havn't got any **** in the bay area yet..
i had to go twise to ref cuz first time my car didnt pass cuz i had skunk2 stage 2 cams and skunk2 adj. cam gears after i took it off put the car back to stock exept DC sport hearders and AEM CAI and stock piping it passed but still had to pay the fine for ticket $380

yeah i envy you every day you live in NC and i'm stuck here in CA, only thing NC has over CA are the hurricanes (the ones with 1 stanley cup, not the storm getting closer and closer by the minute)...

he's going to the ref for an exhaust sound level ticket, not smog, so smog **** does not matter, unless he forgot to mention the ticket is for sound levels AND the cop wrote it up for modified smog equipment too

assuming the ticket is ONLY for sound, you'll be fine with any size piping with the stock muffler, assuming there arent any holes or anything...leave the nonstock piping on, weld/bolt stock muffler on, you will need to have the CAT on, and you'll be fine, hell all he is doing is measuring the sound level for a few minutes, if the stock muffler still sounds like it is too loud for some reason stuff blankets or neighbors cats in the muffler to reduce the sound some more

depends, as far as smog goes, no, because other than the cat, it serves no environmental purpose, different states have different sound requirements, so if your exhaust is louder than allowed then its illegal, but things can be done to make it quieter and "fix" it rather than replacing it, there are also some vague laws saying essentially that aftermarket/nonstock items are illegal that cops try to interpret word for word, the intent is preventing people from having a civic with 1 integra headlight, 1 silvia headlight, a 14, 15, 16, and 17 inch rim rather than the same size, left suspension is soft and right side is stiff, safety crap like that, since we all know that we do not have to use honda oil, honda tranny fluid, honda brake pads, honda light bulbs, etc., you can have aftermarket parts but their intention is for stock/close to stock replacement, so you could have a replaced exhaust becuase the stock one rusted out, but it cant sound loud like an open header as that would be considered more of a modification than a replacement...

It varies from state to state, some states have laws against any modification even tho you have a shiny CARB sticker. Check your State laws thats the only way to know. I know in Killiafornia you NEED a carb sticker if you go to a Ref station cause they will more than likely catch that even if you are under 92db, I researched this after my first post.

go to any of these sites and find me a section where it says anything about the exhaust (catback, so piping and muffler, not the cat or header) having anything to do with emissions or needing a carb sticker, greddy exhausts are 50 state legal but have no carb approval for exhausts while they do for headers, so i guess greddy and dc and other 50 state legal exhaust companies are lying...
here in cali, you can make any modification to your exhaust as long as it stays under 95 db and meets the other requirements like height and stuff....
