Default b18c5 + 92 hatch jdm vs. usdm installation diffrences

okay im about to order my motor tommorow. I have a 92 civic si and i want a b18c5. the shop has a jdm in stock but someone told me its harder to put the jdm into an eg than the usdm.
PLease if you or anyone has done this swap fill me in on what the installation diffrences are between usdm and jdm. Is it only wiring? is there any harnesses etc . that i can buy to override or avoid it. i need a response by tommorow. I know that the jdm performs better but i want actual facts on the diffrences between the installs. Thanks.

I reallize its a lot to get a response in one day, but i just found your website.

Please fill me in

I just put a 98 JDM ITR into my 92 cx hatch and it was not difficult at all. Pretty straight forward. All the wires were already ran from the ecu side to the engine compartment except for one. Just had to had the wires from the engine harness. I don't see why the JDM would be any different then the USDM. Only difference I know of between the two is one has more power.

the actual install (bolting in) of the engine is exactly the same as a US B-series DOHC VTEC engine; same damn procedure. Whoever told you different is misleading you and needs a swift kick to the tea bags.

The only issue is, yes, the engine harness. You CANNOT use the JDM engine harness because its designed for a right hand drive vehicle which you don't own. The JDM harness will only serve as spare parts for plugs. Since the JDM B18C-R engine is 96-98/OBD2 equipped, you need to get an engine harness from a 96-98 US integra.....a 97-98 Integra-R engine harness (used) would be perfect for this....or even a 96-98 GSR engine harness will do. Those harnesses already have VTEC wires embedded into them....so you don't have to wire up any VTEC solenoid components. Don't worry, the 96-98 integra harness WILL PLUG INTO your 92 Si main harness plugs (at passengerside shock tower); although a couple plugs will be left unplugged, and that's ok because those extra plugs are usless in your car anyways since all 92-95 civics are OBD1 wire equipped. You can even reuse your 92Si P28 ecu if you want, by having it reprogrammed for DOHC VTEC engine (mugen spec program suggested). If you need ecu reprograming services, do let me know since I provide them (see http://www.jdmhondaparts.com's ecu section --thats' me)...

good luck kid.

is there any diagrams that will show me how to wire up the usdm harness? are the colors of the wires all the same? if i use an ob1 plug wich wires do i not have to worry about?

well the only one i have is this one:

you already have an Si though, so you dont need to wire vtec. The US harness will plug right into the JDM ITR's sensors, no problem.

OK. Since you are so technical. Why does skunk2 have a harness to plug and OBDI ecu into a OBDII car?

I have a 94 HB and I picked up a 2001 swap, but the guy said he had a friend and sell an OBDII swap with a OBDI ecu. So I was happy as sh**, but ended up with the OBDII ecu. I don't $300-400 to buy an ECU. Can't I get a harness for my situation? Or modify the plugs somehow? What are my options?

"Since you are so technical"... *katman blushes*...why thank you.

Skunk2 offers that particular harness for just that reason, running an OBD2 ecu with an OBD2 engine in an OBD1 equipped car. But lets say one day you wanna have your ecu reprogrammed. Who offers an affordable (under $200) reprogramming service for OBD2 type ecus? no one. That's why people use OBD1 ecu's; because they're more flexible when it comes to ecu reprogramming and you dont have to worry about those damn extra sensors that an OBD2 engine has since an OBD1 ecu isn't programmed to look for those extra sensors.

You can even run a full blown OBD2 B-series engine and OBD2 engine harness in a 92-95 civic/integra and still retain an OBD1 ecu to power the engine. It does work.

How true indeed. This is the same type of setup I have and it ceases to amaze some people, but for what reasons I don't know..... I have a 92 VX with a 99 B18C1 - motor is completely OBDII with all OBDII components (distributor, injectors, etc.). I used the OBDII engine harness but I'm using an OBDI P72 ecu to run it all. With a little wiring of a few sensors (knock, secondary butterflies + O2) everything runs perfect and no CEL's at all. It's been this way for over a year now and still running as strong as the day I put it in.
