Default Engine shut off and a few other things, Help me!!!

Yes Ive searched and found info, but I need some serious help. On a Sunday night I was driving my Crx dropping a friend off. As I drive back home, my car starts to sound wierd and slows down even when I throttle. I DID need oil BUT it only blinked and shut off. I drove it like that few times before i put oil in it. Anyways, i pull my car off the highway, my car was also pretty hot, ive been driving it that whole day. So I just chill out waiting for it to cool down. Then i start it back up, the car still sounds wierd.
Now this is the stupid part that i should of not done, even tho i just drove it about 10-15 ft. at 10 mph. The the car just completly shuts off. Then when i tried to start it, it just makes the "click, click, click" noise. I got it towed home. As i was just messing with my car, i notice that when i tried to start it again, it does the same thing but now everything gets really dim, i think my battety died.
Could it be the battery, or the fact that my i was almost gone on oil? But there were still some in there. Could it be both? Sorry its soo long, Im just really confused, might just have to invest in a Zc later.

Edit: Planning fixing my car tmrw but I just want to know if its a huge problem so I wont spend no money on the smaller stuff.

I will try, thanks. Just hoping that i didnt fry my engine when i was driving around with hardly any oil in it. If it is then yep, time for a Zc i guess. Another thing was when before it completly shut off, it made a pop noise, sounded like a belt snapped or something, but there still look ok.

Did you check to see if it was your timing belt?

Just wanted to make sure. Did you try to get your car to run?

If the battery checks out okay, I would have the alternator checked. I had a Mazda 626 that used to'eat' alternators, and yours was the same sceario that would play out each time one died. The fact that it was at night when it happened, seems it was the lights that pulled the power down. This would be why you were able to drive through the day and everything was okay. The battery was giving up all its power since the alt. was not working. The lights were just enough to push the battery over the edge. If you charge the batt overnight or by giving it a good jump, and it works again, turn on the lights and let it run a bit. Turn it off. See if it starts back up. Battery problem won't take the jump. Alt. problem will take the jump and then lights will pull on it. When you turn it off and try to turn it back on, it's dead.

Not an expert but I have been through that more times than you can imagine! Doesn't seem like the the oil would have anything to do with the power since it was only such a short time. THink about how long someone has to drive with NO oil before they throw a rod.

I have also burned up an engine running it without any oil 'before I knew about such things.' An engine can run without any oil and then you throw a rod. This is a knocking sound that knocks faster and louder as you rev the engine. Not really a clicking sound.

I still say alternator.....
