ITR Trans problem, not sure how to go about using the warranty
I purchased a 93 civic si from friend and HT member 96ls (Mikey) almost two months ago. The car has a b16 and ITR trans. Upon purchase, reverse was always very difficult to get in and out...Mikey said it was like that because it was new. The trans was purchased brand new in November and currently has approx 3,500 miles on it.
Last week, fifth gear started to grind. This is a problem for me. I started contacting dealerships and getting the run around.
I made a thread in Misc/Tech which can be found here:
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1652188
Someone made a suggestion on what to do, but i'm not quite sure how to go about it.
Since you guys are a more, mature knowledgeable group I figure I'd ask you how to go about getting this trans either replaced with a new unit, or simply fixed. I know some of you have friends that work for Honda, so maybe you can ask and find out first hand.
Any and all help is appreciated. I bought the car with it in there because it was new and I didnt want to have any problems with a bad Diff or grinding gears. I seem to have gotten it anyway.

Just met Mike this weekend at ITR Expo, cool dude.
I assume you have the original receipt for the gearbox? Was it installed at the dealership or just purchased there? Perhaps you can get in touch with user len https://honda-tech.com/zerouser...=4157 and he can tell you what your best option is. He works for an Baranco Acura, and I'm sure he'd be happy to explain the warranty process to you.

I have the invoice, and the receipt is in my room somewhere but at the moment its MIA. Mike installed it, his dad ( honda employee) purchased it and used his discount.
I'll give Len a shot, thanks for the heads up as I always thought he was just the guy to get parts from...didnt cross my mind to actually ask him for advice. Thanks.

The problem with the situation is that the acura type R trans is in a honda civic. That is the only thing holding you back. Go find someone with an R and swap out trans' and warranty it...

He does have the hook-up on parts as well, but working in the part dept. he's probably the best person to have explain warranty information.

Jim, I doubt it would matter - how would they know what car it came out of anyhow? The gearbox is a direct bolt-up, so I doubt it would void the warranty.

Well, a rep from Acura of America said the car is modified since its an Acura trans on a Honda vehicle...for no other reason than that.

I see what youre saying Jon. Are we talking about taking the trans off the car and bringing it to them? I dont even know if they would do anything, since they wouldnt know what the problem is. Granted you saved them some work, but that still doesnt allow them to drive the car and hear/feel whats going on. With such a slight grind like the OP is describing I doubt you will be able to notice the synchros just by looking.
I have an occasional grind in 3rd, but while doing my diff my synchros looked great..
OP, reverse is always a PITA. Regardless of trans and car.

That's the most rediculous thing I've heard in a while - it's a B-series gearbox on a B-series motor, both manufactured by Honda. I assume this was an Acura dealership that told you this?

My bust.
Mike, I can see where Honda/Acura would have a problem with that. Best bet would be to try bringing it in by itself or find a teg to put it in. Honda hates seeing things that dont go together. B-series trans to B-series but in a d series chassis..

Agreed. Its all B series...I even told her that. She said that regardless of the fact that Honda and Acura are sister companies it still falls under modified.
It was someone from some sort of Acura headquarters. My local dealership didnt know what to tell me about the situation, so they refered me to Acura of America.

I got a response from len:
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by len »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">len: Well the warranty process does require you to bring the transmission in to an authorized dealer and have them inspect the transmission. They will initially tell you that you have to pay for the labor. That is one thing that is not covered under warranty. Warranty for parts only cover the parts and no labor. Second of all, synchronizers are like brake pads, they are considered a wear item and is not covered under any type of warranty unless it fails right when you put the transmission in. If you have mileage on it already, it is highly difficult to have anything warranteed.</TD></TR></TABLE>
doesnt look good, but i wonder if they'll help me out if i constantly bitch.
