HELP! 97 CRV Cuts off while driving then starts right back, NO CEL?????????
My father-in-law is letting me borrow his 97 CRV for the next 2 months on the grounds that I fix it.
Here's what's happening:
He says that when he is driving to and from work (around 25 miles one way) it will just turn off as in it will completely shut off. He says all he does is pop it in neutral and restart it and it starts right up and keeps going.
He says there is no check engine light coming on.
I haven't had a chance to check it out myself yet, but will this weekend.
Its a 1997 automatic AWD CRV.
Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be???????
Thanks,
Jesse

Your about to get on your father in laws good side.
Replace the electrcal side of the ignition switch. It can be done in ten minutes with a flashlight and a philips head screwdriver. Just go to your local Honda dealer and pick one up from the parts department.
For a quick check of my diagnosis. Start the truck and play with the key if it shuts off without you turning it to off then there you go.
Good luck. If you need more instructions just ask.

pm sent...this is a safety recall...honda issued a technical service bulletin, tsb, for the ignition switch...link is http://www.tegger.com/hondafaq...e.pdf for the actual tsb for the ignition switch. tegger is a great resource for many other cars as well, check out http://www.tegger.com/hondafaq/tsb/index.html#list. dealer will fix this for free, and if they try to charge you, let em know that you could have died if it happened to you on the freeway. it happened to my crv on the freeway, but luckily, there was no traffic and i coasted to a stop....
