OK so i have been doing a little bit of reasearch but i need results and tips from the pro's. i currently have a b20z block that needs new rings, im going to order the new rings but what else do i need to make it a reliable b20 vtec setup?can i use my stock b16 head studs,(i heard that you cannot use them) what should i replace while i have the block disassembled? i will order the golden eagle kit so i do not have to drill out the dowel (sp?) holes on the head.

i also wanted to hot tank the block and head and resurface both of them as well. should i go ahead and rebalnce the crank?. thank you so much for any help you can provide. all this going on a stock b16a2 head

 

you need more than new rings...you cant reuse b20 pistons unless you get some larger valve reliefs cut

i would spring for some rods and pistons while u have it apart

When i had my ls crank balanced, the shop said it was near perfect from the factory so you could probably forego that part and save some $.
But if $ isnt an issue, why not right?
I BELIEVE all b series vtec engines use the same head studs. Just check the application chart from ARP.
I would replace the oil pump and at least get forged pistons even if you mate them to factory rods...And of course a new bottom end gasket set. I only hear good things about the GE kit, but never used it myself...

Order some cast ITR style pistons from RS Machines. They come with rings, and the valve reliefs are already sized for the vtec head's valves. With these pistons you can reuse your stock rods. Head studs buy the ARP. B16 will not work. Replace rod bearings, gaskets, oil and water pumps with ITR/GSR units. Sometimes even with the golden eagle kit you will still have to drill out the dowel holes. But try it anyways your luck might be better than mine. Deck the block and re-surface the head while your at it is very good. No OIL leaks. Rebalance the crank I would not. Stock is fine. Don't forget your oil line, and more fuel will be needed. good luck and let us know how it went.

 

wouldnt using the itr pistions drop my compression as oppsed to getting the b20 pistions from rs machines? im gonna start the build hopefully this week, also ordering rod bolts from arp. but the cost of the two pistons is a difference, they want 300 for the b20 pistons and around 170 for the itr ones.if i can go with the itr pistons then i will

 

Itr pistons will not work on your b20. They are too small. You need the B20 ones.

 

They are ITR style pistons, 84mm.

I am using the RSMACHINES B20 ITR style pistons in my motor. They have valve reliefs for the vtec heads, dome shape like ITR pistons and they are cast like oem pistons. You can use your stock rods.

 

is it still safe to re-ring the pistions and still run on stock cams? later down the road when i get bigger cams i will get pistions with vavle relief cuts

What are the benefits of having the RSMACHINES B20 ITR style pistons? So they can fit? Compared to CTR pistons, is the RSMACHINE style better?

they come in 84mm.

 

They come 84 ,84.5 ,85 and 85.5. And they come with 33mm reliefs.

Honestly, I can actually say that my motor would be the first one to have tested those RS ITR pistons and from the looks of things, they seem to work nice

These pistons are fairly new (as far as I know) to the market. After acydphreak posted his dyno sheets I went ahead and had my motor built with those pistons too. I daily drive my car and I have put about 2000 miles on them and have also drag raced them with no problems what so ever. This is all motor we are talking about so piston failure would not be so common.

yea...the mods didn't see fit to let the readers on this board read the information in that thread...weak sauce...hahaha...honestly, it kinda went off topic towards the end and they locked it and moved it to the 'brown hole'

 

wait so, these great lovley b20 itr pistons could be used with any type of cams and set up. even tho if i used these pistons i think i would use pro 1 cams.
