Default 97 teg - What motor do I have?

This is day 1 for me owning my first teg and I'm trying to orient myself a bit. I just bought a '97 Integra LS with 130k on it. The car didn't come with any owners manual or documentation (other than a clean title), so I'm just stumbling around on the net looking for clues as to what I actually just spent $4k on. About all I can tell is that the car was suppose to be a 1.8L. Hopfully you guys can help me.

Anyway, I was wondering if someone can ID this motor for me, and maybe tell me a few things about it. Good, bad, and ugly... let me have it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

It's a pretty good engine considering it's for an LS, the b20 had a lil' more torque if i remember correctly...
I have that too in my 97 RS, im ok with it even tho it's a non-vtec engine
it looks like the car's pretty much stock, were you planning on modding or something?
Or just leaving it as is?

first thing u should do is give the car a full tune-up ( all maintence things like timing belt, waterpump, fuel filter etc etc.. ) since your car has 130k miles on it.

second.. boost the hell out of it

Thanks for the info! I'm semi-interested in doing some mods. It's going to be a daily driver (around 100 miles/day), so I'm mainly interested in doing the things that are going to make the driving experience more fun, but also keep the gas mileage decent. Any ideas? Intake?

The advice about the maintenance sounds like a good suggestion to me for a first step though.

T-belt
Water Pump
Fuel Filter
Plugs/Wires (already done)

Other suggestions on maintenance thing's I should have done right out of the shoot?

Here's a n00b question for ya, the silver section at the top of the pic, what is that called? It looks almost new on the motor (can't tell so much in the pic). Possibly some work was done? I don't imagine someone would bother making it look that pretty just for fun...

the silver section=your intake manifold.

Other suggestions for maintence:

1. Clutch, Brake fluid. (just look at the colour and consistency)

2. Transmission fluid

3. Coolant flush and i think you already mentioned fuel injection and filter.

Also check your cv boots, ball joints and bushings. This is an excuse for energy suspension bushings! Alot better than oem rubber

tranny could have old particles from grinds and such, brake fluid could need a change and coolant flush is always good for a fresh start

I agree with everyone. Get the car FULLY serviced. Dont forget about the fuel filter, oil filter, and fuel injectors. The car will take care of you as good as you that care of it. Intake, headers, full exhaust and upgrade ignition is what I would do.

Upgrading the stock Honda/Acura ignition is completely unneccesary. The stock system is more than adequate, just check out the turbo forum and see how many horse power they run on stock ignition systems. Here's a hint, over 400whp.

If I were you, owning your first integra, make sure you take some time driving it in its stock form so you get a good appreciation of the car and learn what it can do.

Then do some suspension modifications to start off. I would recommend an Integra Type R Rear Sway Bar and a mild drop with quality springs and shocks.

Take you time, do everything right the first time. And also do it all yourself. This will also give you a great understanding of your car and how everything works.

Welcome to H-T. Have fun reading.

Thanks for all the tips!

This is a 5 speed, so what kind of service would be done on the transmission system?

I love the idea of working on it myself (not only to save some $$, but to learn how the car works). Any service manuals that you would reccommend?

My service check list:

T-belt
Water Pump
Fuel Filter
Plugs/Wires (already done)
Clutch (fluid?)
Transmission (fluid?)
Brake fluid (check)
Coolant Flush
Fuel Injectors Cleaned
Oil Change (5w30? synthetic?)
CV boots
Ball Joints
Bushings

As far as mods go, the intake and sway bar sound like good possibilities to start out with. Any suggestions on parts I should check out?

I can't believe I'm looking to start modding on day 2. /cry

And some tips for your first and BEST mod:

GET AN ALARM, THE CLUB, RELOCATE YOUR HOOD WIRE, ATTACK DOGS, ETC. Because there are countless other people that like your car too, maybe not for the same reason tho....

Chiltons are pretty good too...they are a little bit to general on some of the topics but they usually do cover just about everything on the whole car. welcome to the teg world. where all your money seems to just melt away!

dont cheap out on oil. ive used asmoil for quite a while now and wont settle for anything less. 10w-40 is what i use in my ls. i run 6k miles in btwn changes and the oil looks the same as when i put it in.
