ive got a friend that just got a honda civic SI and he wants to know is it a EK5 or what.

incorrect. EK9 is only is JDM land. USDM 96-00 Civic HB would be EJ6. People say "EK" just because it became the general image of all 96-00 Civic CX/DXs. Just like how people say "EG" its not really an "EG" if its a USDM 92-95 HB. Its actually EH2/EH3.
