Slowing the idle... is 1,700 rpm idle normal??
Just wondering what the normal idle is. mine idles at 1700 when cold. i dont think their is a need for this, as the engine is a smooth runner. i dont like the idea of my engine going to 0rpm to 1700 rpm while stone cold. on a car with carbs, you just turn the idle screw. what about injected cars? Thanks.
Also, (the car was ideling high before this "incident") i removed a plastic cap at the end of the fuel rail (covering what looks like a valve, a vacume valve even) and a screw dropped god knows where. Any ideas? It does not seem to affect the running of the engine in any way. The screw was obviously very loose before i removed the plastic cap. Thanks.

1700rpm is normal. Its not going to hurt your motor going from "0-1700 stone cold". The reason it is that high is so it can warm up qucker. Dont panic.
And that little plastic cap sounds like the cap over the banjo bolt that the fuel runs into the fuel rail from... dunno about the screw tho. Anything look out of place?

Thanks. I am happy now I know this is normal. It runs at a normal 8-900 tickover when warm. I was just worried about the extra wear on the engine as I am soon going to be using the car as a daily driver.
That screw that popped out was plugging a hole in the middle of the vacuum like device at the left end of the fuel rail (near the oil filler cap). I have no idea about fuel injection, but the car is running the same without this screw anyhow.

as long as you don't try to drive or rev it too much while its stone cold. That's bad. Give it at least 30 seconds for the oil to circulate through the engine.
Also, you will need a aftermarket ECU like the Power FC to be able to control the idle speed.

Umm... I'd wait till the motor is warmed up at mid temp before reving the crap out of it.

kidding right??
700, 800, 900 is normal after warm up depending what you have running on the car... (i.e. headlights, ect...)

damn that's gotta be hard on the motor for it to settle around redline in VTEC!! ahhahaha
think i might quote this to my profile!!
