Default 3rd gear grinding noises

Hello everyone-

Recently, when I shift from 2nd to 3rd (RPM's are good) I hear a grinding noise from the car when I move from 2nd to 3rd. There is no noticable difference in drivability and it goes away as soon as I finish the shift, but I'm scared I'm breaking something. Is there any way to diagnose this, short of dropping the tranny out of the car?

Thanks.
Justin Chou

If the shifting is stiff then add tranny fluid. If it is no then it is prolly your sycnhros. Try so called double clutch upshifting top see if its your sychros.

Clutch in on second then shiift to neutrel. Let the clutch out then waut a sec for rpm's top drop then clutch in and shift to third then clutch out............

Good luck

ya if it grinds then it is a god knows what problem cause it shouldnt if you rev match cause thats what you had to do on really old cars that dont have synchros to get them not to grind. Try it if it dont grind get new synchros installed or engine swap and tranny hehe

Good luck

As for the last post. I don't know what you mean by gears, but if you mean GEARS then I'll have to say that the gears NEVER wear out. The gears are always engaged and the chance of them wearing out goes beyond the life of the tranny. It's the dog teeth on the gears that get ground when you shift and that's usually caused by worn syncros. Try not shifting hard into 3rd and giving a second to get in. If the syncros seem "lazy" then they're worn out. I have the same problem when I shift into 3rd hard. I changed my tranny fluid to Motul Gear 300 and that doesn't change anything, same with Redline MTL. I've heard that these oils are too low friction and the syncros don't like them though... not sure about the validaty of that info. The work to do syncros is expensive, you might as well get another tranny take it apart and put new syncros in it.

That is 100 % correct. You have to understand how a tranny works to understand the gears dont wear out. Your gears are never pulled off the main shaft. When it grinds your grinding the teeth that lock ino each gears hub.

i had the exact same post a couple weeks ago, it was also my third gear on my 91si, and had a grind noise, and i also have a b&m short shift kit w/stabilizer, and was wondering do you have a short shift too? maybe thats our problem?

well, anyway, i was posting crap about it and everyone was convincing me my clutch or tranny was about to go out, but in fact i found out they were fine.

i just took it to a place called honda house, here in dallas,tx, and he fixed whatever it was for only $35 bucks! ,.......turns out the clutch was just way too loose, and the clutch adjustment was'nt staying where it was supposed to be, and he fixed it, and now there is'nt really much of a grind, but he just said "you should be fine, as long as you don't "speed-shift" from 2nd to 3rd."

so before getting all worried about needing a tranny or clutch, i would get it checked by someone who you trust, and it might not be as bad as you thought, and instead only pay $35.
