Fully Built D16z6--What Turbo for 420whp????
Heres the story I got this 1994 hatch with a fully built JG D16z6 with a FMAX turbo kit.. The car through down 418 whp and 314tq at 22psi with a 70 shot of nitrous. Well the Turbonetics Turbo that came with the turbo kit was sold and the owner bought a XS power turbo and I am not aware of the trim or a/r size.. My question is what is a good turbo for this motor to achieve this whp again without a long spool time.. The turbo know at 8psi has tons of lag of pulls so hard up top. Also the head is fully ported and polished with a JG camshaft so it breathes extremly well.. The compression ratio is 9:0:1. Thanks for any input..

i would either go with a gt30r or 35r...your choice.

I also reccomend a GT series. It'll cut down on the lag big time.
Local guy I went to school with just made 250whp on 7lbs with a GT3071R on a B16 stopping at 6k. Full spool by 3k. It's now running more boost (I think around 10lbs) making 310whp.

Not without a lot of lag. 400whp out of a D16 is asking a lot without a good amount of lag. I was told even a GT35 on a fully built D16 w/ major P&P head would have a good bit of lag to it.
cost difference will be not much due to pricing increase of the T series stuff. for na extra $250-$300 might as well go with a ball bearing and not worrie.
I'd also be a little happier making a little less power and having a faster spooling turbo. I'd rather pickup 20whp throughout most of my power band rather than have an extra 50 for a few hundred rpms.

For a GT30 a local shop quoted me 1210.
edit: Now that I typed that I realize why you want to go with something else.

Yeah its really expensive. I talked to the previos owner and he had a .48 a/r 54 trim turbonetics.. That is actaully what made 418whp. He said power came on about 1k rmps faster.. So i think i might try to find a matching turbo.. What would a turbo like the one I described go for!!
I also got a question.. The owner has been running 20w-50 valvoline non synthetic and he recommends to keep using this oil. Should i got back to 10w-30 for just keep it wear its at.. Also should I convert to to full synthetic. THanks for any opinions!
full synthetic is definately way better oil to be using. if you can find 20-50w full synthetic (mobil 1) or something along those lines, that's probably not a bad idea either.
I use 20w-50 in summer, 10w-30 in winter, non synthetic, built motor. It's a honda don't spend $5 a quart on oil. Get a t3/t4 for like $350, i'm sure there is a size that will spool by 4 or 5 and make 400 hp.
You can make 400whp on a t3/t4. I made 424whp on a sc50 .48 a/r. It's all in the headwork. She hits full boost @ 27psi ~ 5600.
The GT Series turbo's are for sure the way to go if you got the cash, but the t3/t4 will get you there if you got some nice headwork like you say you do.
