Default ???s about a little black box under the dash of the 1987 Accord

I hope I can get some answers finally. For the past year and a half, a bunch of people have been scratching their heads as to why my car was draining the battery. It took four days of sitting for the battery to be dead. Everything was inspected, checked, rechecked, parts replaced, etc. etc., but the battery continued to drain out.

I found a little black box under the dash on the passenger side and did a little test. I let the battery drain completely, unplugged this box and recharged the battery. The battery has yet to drain. The car is working again. Yeah!! BUT...what does this little black box do??? Is it a box that holds computer components? What does it control? How important is this box to the working performance of the vehicle? Is it safe to drive the car without it? Can a junk yard replacement be sufficient enough?

It had been concluded that this box may have gotten shorted due to a flood that left that area of the car very saturated with rain water.

I'd really appreciate some insight here as what to do next now that we've found the problem.

Thank you
Cheryl
