Default Xbox in a civic

Hi All,
As a little project I am looking at installing an xbox into my civic sedan (my GF would love it for the long trips...)
Havent really thought much about the setup, other than:
Cordless controls (if necessary)
Start with the one monitor in the passenger sun visor
New head deck that can play dvds (and with av ins for the xbox)

Other than that, Im not sure what else to plan for. Im not even sure where would be the best place to mount the box (I was thinking about under the globe box....would there be enough room?)

Any ideas/tips would be appreciated.

I was advised in the '92-00 Civic/Del Sol section that I would need an inverter...

i have a ps2 slim in my accord. It fits in the glove box. I also had a house dvd player under the passengers seat. I used a power inverter for both. So, figure out where it could fit and you can get to the tray, and just use a power inverter and you'll be fine.

Visor monitor would be a pain in the *** to watch after a while. Definitely need an inverter (400w is good). You should just mod your xbox and put a 200gig drive in there though, that way location doesn't matter

You don't really need an inverter, there are ways to take a computer power supply and make it work with an XBox natively using 12v DC. Eliminating possible noise caused by inverters. I am working on a similer project to you in my Accord, just having problems with getting a working LCD screen, somehow I managed to get two defective ones in a row.

My Cardomain page showing the project (Will have more pictures soon when I get a working visor LCD screen):
http://www.cardomain.com/ride/803084/6
Probably will use fiberglass to make the custom front panel of the XBox I have look like it belongs in the passenger dash. Removed the airbag and will be moving the airvent pipe that goes to the passenger side. I will have detailed information on that page once my project is done.

I certainly would go the modded route, so much more you can do with it. Check out the list of features on my page. Also that list is just for the software I have shown, I have many other programs installed on it.

I agree a PS2 is better at saving space, but if you mod the XBox I would say forget the PS2. But all in all I say, don't use an inverter if you can do that, don't use a PS2 unless all you want is games and dvds, and don't get a new headunit as the XBox itself will display the video and play DVDs. Just make sure your headunit has AUX inputs then mod that XBox and have a mobile media center on wheels. If you are worried about bulk you can always try and make a custom case for the XBox, once modded you can also ditch the dvd-rom and make it even smaller and just copy things over the network, either wirelessly or with a cable ran from your house.

Good page for info on modding it and getting the things needed to do it:
http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/

You can always ask me questions if any of this interested you, just can't promise I will answer quickly, but I will try. Good luck with your project.

Thanks for the replies.

Definitely going down the mod route.

Got an inverter on the way (while I am confident with putting the chips in I dont really want to do a full revamp of the box itself).

I am looking at even leaving the xbox in the boot with a wireless controller. Aiming to have a switch on the lead to the inverter to sort out the on/off power to the box, since you can just jam something in the on/off switch on the xbox (then its will switch on/off depending on being supplied with power).

My one question here is to do with where to wire everything up to powerwise. I pictured maybe wiring the inverter and the monitor into the lighter socket wiring. that way I could still use the socket to charge my phone/ipod. However, Ive been told that this will cause overheating and probably blow something. Since I dont want to wire anything up directly to the battery (if I can help it), is there any tips someone can give me?

pikiaoboy:
I wouldn't wire it to the lighter. Find a good powersource and wire it in, the lighter isn't what I would call a good powersource. I mean you can if you really want to but its not the best. With mine I ended up running it from the battery, ignition, and a good ground.

imadigitalgod:
Xecuter3 CE with the X3 Control Panel here, running whatever the most current XBMC T3CH build was put out as the dashboard.

But you cant do what you can do with an xbox.

Imagine not having to carry the games in your car so they wont get scratched up like your CD's.

If you have a modded xbox it doesn't matter where you stick it because you dont need access to the dvd tray. All you need access to is the power button and that is easy to move. Should probably provide access to the ethernet cable if you want to load new games. Then just run the composite video cable to your screen.

Actually wireless bridges come in handy here, no wire running out to your car. At least that is what I am doing.

thanks for the tips.

well, I managed to hook the xbox up. Not the prettiest job but it works hehe. I went with the Inverter option and at the moment it is in the glovebox wired directly to the battery (with a good fuse in between of course). then running the cords to the boot where thexbox will go (Plan on taking the xbox out quite regularly at this point in time).

Am just waiting for the lcd monitor now, wondering what to wire it up to (since Ive been told not to use the lighter wires).
