Default LS/VTEC HP/Price

Yeah, I'm sorry, I did a search for this, it always discludes HP, nothing comes back with horsepower, it always discludes LS, and I can't seem to find it anywhere on google...blah....

From what I understand it's an LS (B18b/B18a) block with a B16/GSR/ITR head and same tranny (or different B series tranny...)

FRom what I've also read there's no reallll big difference between the B18a and the b18b, so that doesn't matter (maybe 8-10hp, not big deal), that and a B16 head (b/c I'm too poor to go for the ITR/GSR head) - how much hp would that run me as that, stock intake, probably upgrade to CAI, headers, and exhaust later, but pretty exact stock for then...and then how much after I install I/H/E

So by piecing it together (B18b or a block, B16 head..) not sure what kinda tranny to use....I know the B16 would be ideal, but it might have to wait b/c trannys can get expensive, how much am I looking at? I'm assuming about 2-2.5k if I buy used and get good deals..?

Yeah, if u have anything to add to this, like bad idea, or good idea, or anything just to add plz do by all means - and yeah, I know pple hate threads like this, but I'm having trouble finding it (and don't copy/paste a search result of 300 or 600 results) as most of them don't have to do with what I Need, u wanna post a specific link from there - different story... - thx for reading

Hey man I have a similar build in my EG right now. I have a B18b block with itr pistons, so slightly higher compression. I also have a ported and polished and 3 angle valve job on my B16 head, with a ported intake manifold and throttle body. I also have the SiR II JDM cams installed too. I am pushing right at 195 hp to the ground. So minus the mods I have on mine and with an almost stock ls/vtec build you should be looking anywhere from 175-180hp.

Oh and by the way the b16 head is a better flowing head and better all around platform to run with this set up rather than the b18c1 or 5. So all in all you should have a good strong motor even with stock internals. I would however get the crank balanced and possibly knife edged while you are building it. It should run you around 250-300 for the machine work, and its worth it.

Did you just say the b16 head is better than the the type r head?
Type r head is the same cast as the b16 head champ?
gsr head will raise compression over a b16 head and imo has more potential than a b16 head.

For those of you who are interested in real answers:

I spent a lot of money and didnt even touch the bottom end.

Gsr head $650
b18b $600
itr water pump $90
itr oil pump $100
itr tbelt $45
aebs im $140
arp hs $125
ge ls/vtec kit $225
usdm itr header $160
phearable ecu $200
axles,half shaft $150
misc. bolts, wiring and stuff $150
lubes etc $60

about $2600 without touching the bottom end, no transmission.

If you are a noob builder then I would just recommend buying a swap ready to go.

I'm happy with how my motor feels and I'm probably aroung 165 whp maybe.

No you're not with stock cams.

Its going to be different in price foreveryone, depending on where you get your big ticket parts. There can be some big discrepancies in what people pay. Often, people are already starting with some of the parts they need.

Looking at the previous list:

Gsr head $650
b18b $600
itr water pump $90
itr oil pump $100
itr tbelt $45
aebs im $140
arp hs $125
ge ls/vtec kit $225
usdm itr header $160
phearable ecu $200
axles,half shaft $150
misc. bolts, wiring and stuff $150
lubes etc $60

There is $1400 there just in the B18, head, and axles. To me, thats pricey, but depends on how much you are willing to look/work for parts.

I just managed to pick up the guts from a wrecked GSR - B17 / YS1 cable trans, axles, shifter + linkages, harness, front complete knuckles with brakes at a junkyard. Cost me $900 for all of that, and was a 400 mile round trip, but was worth it for me. (really wanted that trans, as its going into my 91 hatch).

If you are taking the time to do this, you should really think about the extra few dollars to change the pistons and ESPECIALLY the rod bolts to ARP pieces. Moving from the stock PR4 pistons to some PR3s or P30s is the easiest, as no machining is needed. The rod bolts are probably the #1 think that will keep your motor happy at the 7500-8000 rpm range it will now be seeing.

In terms of HP, the dynos I've seen of STOCK B18 bottom / STOCK B16 head will minimal tuning seem to be about 155-160hp.

With B16 pistons, stock cams, most people seem to be turning about 175-180 hp.

I'm doing up my LS/VTEC in the next month or so, gathering parts right now. There is a decent little article in Sport COmpact Cart, you can read it on the website, or in your back issues, (if you save them like I do, since I get a different car evry few months, you never know when you want to look back for tech stuff..). It was the issue with the lightweight silver SRT-4 on the cover, labelled American Psycho.

Their build, they did a stock bottom/top combo, with the PR3 ecu untuned, I beleive they hit low-mid 150s in HP.

Im sorry I should have stated the years on my items, that might have warranted some of the prices. I didnt want 10 year old heads or bottom ends. Sure I could have purchased a gen 1 jdm b16 head for like 400-500 but why when I got what I got for a small amount more.

My head was a 2001 gsr head, block was actually a complete 1998 long block. 1 axle was brand new and half shaft and other axle was used. I sold the ls head for 100 bucks so 500 I should say for the block. most of the other parts were brand new. Gsr head offers a nice little bump in compression and my original plan was a modest turbo setup but not anymore.
