Mugen High Performance Air Intake System
I have a quick question. On a 06' RSX type S, is the Mugen Air Intake System a direct bolt-on? I know the Comptech Icebox isn't for the fact that you gotta replace the clutch line and some hardware. I was wondering if the Mugen Intake System needs any modification for it to fit and work properly.
If anyone owns the Mugen Intake System I would apreciate it if you would share your information on the installation

I'm not sure if the Type-S is the same in a specific way that I'm going to mention, but here's one thing that I did...
The crankcase breather hose (the one that goes from the valve cover to the top half of the intake box) on my EP has a coolant line that's attached and passes over its top side. That breather hose, and the rigid center under the coolant line, is too long to let the Mugen box fit properly.
I took out that hose assembly and replaced it with another piece of hose -- same diameter, but shorter. Then, I used a hydraulic fitting to join the two rubber coolant tubes.
Everything else should bolt right up to a Type-S motor.

i was thinking the same thing.
i was thinking the same thing.
Someone who had a bunch of extra money laying around and was tired of the lag, heatsoak, no low-end power, and noise of an AEM V2. And, who wanted the response & consistency of the stock airbox, just with more power overall.

an injen cai isnt quality?
the mugen air box doesnt even come with an intake pipe. it still uses the factory one. im not saying it isnt quality. i just think the price is a little too expensive for me.
how about this. if i won the lottery, id buy it. id probably buy one for you too...

It's one of the best looking, but as far as performance it blows goats on the USDM cars. Look at where it sucks air in from...right behind the radiator.
Also, the intake tube almost rests on the rad hose itself. You get heattape to put on, but it's still not ideal.
Fitment is not the best IMO. It's a bitch to get in and it gets all scratched up if you are not careful.
As far as power is concerned, my comptech icebox, IMO, made better power numbers. So, I sold the Mugen (yes, I owned one) and put the icebox back on. Air pickup location is so much better with the icebox it isn't funny.
Mugen's DC2 intake is a homerun. The DC5 intake just doesn't work all that well on the USDM cars. $715 better spent elsewhere, unless you just want the part because it is Mugen. That's cool if that's what you are after.

Great points, one thought I had but didn't try yet is to make an Ice Box type snorkle for the Mugen box. I had the same concerns as Todd00 so did some testing using a pair of remote thermometers. At idle on a hot day I found a 20 degree air temp difference between the air in the Mugen intake scoop and the air at the grill (!). I fabricated another scoop to run from behind the grill, over the rad and to the Mugen scoop and damn, the difference dropped to around 4 degrees. 5Zigen makes such a scoop but that **** is expensive. Once underway though, air temp differences were 1 - 2 degrees without the add on scoop.

I had and still have the Injen CAI and now have the Mugen air box in my 2005-S
I did both installs myself. Mugen as you can tell takes up all the room in the engine bay giving it a nice clean look.
The air box has the BEST throutle responce ever and I had a 00 GSR before...
It is a direct bolt on with no mods needed... The injen i got was horrible in my opinion.... maybe b/c i had the first batch but.. the tube didn't have a great circle finish near the filter and the washer bottle didn't line up at all... and then you have to cut your fender lining to get it to fit right...
With the Mugen i must say I miss the intake noise and the VTEC explosions like other honda's.... but i mean there are reasons why people like myself buy the air box...
And for the feedback about where the air duct is for the air box there are ways to get better flow of air in the box besides getting a after market bumper... I am very happy with mine...

That's actually where the Mugen scoop fits in my EP3, right above the radiator. It's wedged between the top of the radiator and the underside of the cross bar, and it gets air directly from the area behind the grille. Better than the stock intake scoop, which gets air next to the battery (after it's gone through the radiator), and far better than either a SRI or AEM V2. And, no risk of hydrolock (none worse than stock, anyway), and no major cutting needed for installation.
I don't think that metal is ideal for intakes anyway. Metal is good for heatsinks -- it releases heat into passing air easily. Metal tubing is also easier for a manufacturer to stock than one or two hundred plastic molds. Therefore, the fact that the Mugen box uses the stock rubber duct to the throttle body doesn't concern me.

Thanks for everyones opinion. I understand where most are coming from about the price but thats not an issue with me. Think of it this way, if the mugen was the same price of most CAI, which would u pick?

alright let me set this straight. The reason why mugen makes their products a certain way is because they have strict rules in japan for racing. They make them to those standard. People always say that mugen doesn't make as much power as injen. It doesn't but when it comes to throttle response there is nothing better. Most of you guys just say it's to much I rather buy injen or AEM. why don't you figure out why they made it like that in the first place. I buy mugen stuff not to be a label ***** but because I like their products and I like quality parts that fit very well.
