timing?

Default timing?

ok i really need some info my car was making a popping noise coming from my intake after a complete tear down and rebuild and i was told it was the cam timing so today i took the timing belt off and adjusted the timing the two cams are dead on and i THOUGHT that the crank was at TDC but know it want even crank and is throwing smoke out of the intake like a puff of smoke so is the timing off or what?? i need to know bc this crx has been down for like 6 months and i really need it to run. any info would be great and by the way it is a D16a1 in my 88 rex if that helps any? plzzz help!!!!!!

you have an adjustable cam gear? theres marks on the cam gear and the crank gear both need to be ligned up. could be a tooth off. or are you talking about ignition timing?

no i dont have adjustable gears i got the lines on the cam gears lined up and the crank has two red dots on it and it is supposed to line up with the mark on the timing belt cover right? it ran before but was making that popping noise thats when i thought it was a tooth off but now it wont crank at all need help.

OK I know on an LS it's like this: (dseries I'm not sure)

If you take the crank pulley and timing covers all the way off, there's a mark on the crank sprocket - has teeth that the timing belt rides on - anyway that mark aligns with a mark on the oil pump. That's a good way to know for sure.
