Pull your thermostat back out and make sure it is not stuck open.

As a precaution, I always boil some water and use a candy thermometer to check and see if the new thermostat is opening and closing at the proper temperatures.

This comes from being bit in the *** with a bad "New" thermostat once upon a time ago. The thing never opened up at all.

In your case, it appears that your coolant is not staying in the block long enough for you to reach operating temp, so my guess would be that the thermostat is stuck open, allowing the coolant to flow through the radiator before it is hot.

Good thing is that you probably won't overheat the engine. Bad thing is what you are experiencing.

Hope that helps...

Non-OEM thermostats seem to be a gamble on both correct opening temp or even operating at all. And even if you do have OEM, what Cuda suggested is spot on (it's the procedure listed in the Helms for checking thermostat operation). The thing is, if the thermostat is stuck open, your gauge may show cold but the engine is probably hot. Coolant that isn't allowed to sit still for a second won't absorb the block heat like it should - the thermostat makes that happen. So while he's probably right with respect to warming it up in the morning, I'd have to disagree with 'continued' operation.

Did you also make sure to re-bleed the coolant system?
