Default Help!! CEL, Code 8, and Temp Gauge reading ABOVE RED!

First off, my car has been getting a CEL and reading a Code 8 (Top Dead Center Sensor) and has had a little trouble starting up (cranks a little long). I tested the sensor, and it is within spec. took it to dealer, they didn't find out what it was, but they're next step was to try a new ecu... didn't buy it because they wanted $1500!!! and wasn't gaurenteed to fix my problem (just the next step)

Today, I just came back from a friends house, and my temp gauge was ABOVE RED!! with a check engine light... I checked the engine and it didn't seem...abnormal (could not touch coolent hose near engine, but thought that was normal)

Fans arn't coming on either.

Coolant Res. has plenty of coolent too...

I'm stumped?

what should I try next? new ECU? new Thermostat?

If its in the red its telling you something unless your gauges are reading wrong. Turn on your A/C and see if both fans come on. Id try to replace your thermostat since you said the reservoir was full. Its supposed to be partially full.

by full, I meant not empty/low (it was at the min. mark)

it's ABOVE red, like by a 1/4"... goes down when key removed

what if both fans don't come on with AC?

First off, it would be nice to know the <U>Year and Model </U>car. Second, the fans should both be on when you turn the A/C on. Third, here's a link for troubleshooting the cooling system (below). Forth, if the cooling system checks out, take the cover off of the ecu and check for leaking capacitors inside. Best of luck finding the problem.

Jump your fan switch and see if your fans turn on. its the one on the t-stat housing.
