How the hell do i tell what tranny I have!!!
I bought my car with a ZC in it its a 1991 civic DX! The engine was put in it before the owner I bought it from had it, if that makes sense! I didnt know how to work that oh well. Anyway my clutch it slipping and i need a new one but I dont know how to tell what kinda tranny I have therefore I cant order a clutch! Is there anyway I can tell what kinda tranny it is by the serial number? I know the serial number begins with L3 if that helps at all? I really need to figure this out because my car is a daily driver and I need to fix the clutch ASAP! thanks alot for the help I hope I can figure this out!
All 88-91 civic/crx transmissions are L3. There is a way to tell which one you have but I can't find the post about it? Does someone by any chance have the guide to id'ing L3 transmssions??
ok..
well it sounds like the previous owner had the motor replaced with a Japanese engine. If he wasn't a Honda enthusiast, he must of just did what most people do when they're original motor goes bad....find a used Japanese engine! he probably saw one those "Japanese engine" ads in the local classified paper and pursued one.
about the tranny.
What year is your car? if you're car is an 88-89 then you need an 88-89 civic clutch (pressure plate, disc, and throw-out bearing). IT doesn't matter what model clutch you buy (DX, Si, etc). If you have a 90-91 civic, then you need a 90-91 civic clutch. the 88-89 & 90-91 tranny spline teeth have different teeth counts.
- 89's have 19 teeth I believe
-90-91 have 20 or 21 teeth (can't remember)
the best advice I can tell you, is to take off your transmission (if you know how) and count the spline's teeth, that will tell you which clutch disc you have to buy.
