yeap dowel pins. there great, espically when you use wood work.
its works like an alignment tool as well, it keeps the joint together giving it a stronger hold.

there are dowel pins in head and tranny to properly allign each to the block

 

yah.. they're used to line up the engine and transmission - in that case they're a pain in the ***
