Default Out of State Bike, how do I register it here in CA???

hello everybody,

when i moved here to California i was in the middle of building a motard back in Illinois. the bike is a 06 Suzuki RMZ 450. now the bike is nearly complete and i will be finishing it when i go home in July, the only problem is that i have heard the California DMV is absolute hell on out of state vehicles. i talked to some people at the place where i work and they said i will probably need some type of odometer reading and some emissions information. now the first problem is that there is no odometer, the second would be how do i know if the emissions would pass here in CA. i am aware that there make 49 state vehicles and then there are CA vehicles for the emissions. so would this bike likely or unlikely make emissions, and would changing the jetting and removing the exhaust make it more likely to pass the emissions inspection?

so i know this is just alot of info but i am really kinda in a funk about this. i was putting this bike together for a while before i moved here and i am really amped about finally being able to ride it, now there are all these obstacles in my way. so any suggestions, information, ideas, questions, comments ect ect ect would be greatly appreciated.

and if you are reluctant to help because the bike is a Suzuki RMZ, just imagine it is a Honda CRF. it may end up being one anyways.

it is only hell if you live here oriignally and try to bring in a bike... if your moving from out of state with a reg'ed bike your pretty much good to go as long as you have all necessary safety items, turn signals etc. Once again, your bike must be legally reg'ed in the state your coming from before moving here, otherwise you have a track bike

I have re-read your initial question, your going to have trouble with out a odo, currently there is no emissions testing for bikes other than new sales, but that will be changing in the near future from what I understand

thanks for the info but from what it sounds like it is worst case scenario. the bike has never been registered, and i already live here in california and have been here for nearly a year now.

a little background on the bike, it was alotted for a young motocross racer. he gets like 10 new bikes every year from suzuki. he really isnt big enough to need the 3 450s that they sent him so i aquired one for nearly nothing and have been peicing it together. so the bike hasnt been registered, has no odometer and i am installing a light and signal kit but it hasnt been installed yet, so that isnt a worry.

but are there any creative suggestions about how to get this bike registered here in cali, or does anyone think that i would be better off having him tell suzuki he needs a bike in CA and then go and pick one up at Suzuki. although this would mean i would be disassembling the bike i currently have and shipping all the parts to california to be assembled here. the main problem there would be the fact i have no tools or space to build it here. the main upside is i would possibly be able to get a twin exhaust FI RMZ 07 instead of the carbed 06.

decisions decisions. unfortunately these decisions equal stress.

contact the DMV and explain to them that you moved here a year ago but now want to bring your bike from your home state into CA and see what they say

I say you might be SOL... we're really strict in these parts, all the tree huggers. I did have a link to help you with the forms to street a Motard, been a while since I have seen it since I have given up on a motard for the short term.

i was just super amped about getting my motard out here. since i dont ever ride on the freeway it would be cool to just roll around town on it. plus it would be different. this is a huge area for riders and i havent seen a supermoto on the street anywhere around here. plus with around 60-70 hp at only around 200lbs it would have more than enough power to rip around town.

quick question though, is it possible for this to be done if i get my hands on a CA bike. like a bike that is a CA emissions bike from the factory still in the crate. i mean i still have the rims, pipe, tires, shock and fork springs and i could sell the bike i got to cover the cost of shipping the parts out and picking up the new bike. do you think this would be worthwhile or would my best bet overall be to sell the whole project and just buy a sportbike ouot here. (damn ducati monster)

you might be better off just buying a converted bike already. Save you all the trouble of trying to get one plated. You can get a brand new DRZ400SM for $6100 otd

but, anyone else with any thoughts comments or suggestions i encourage you to please express them and give as much information as possible. also if anyone else here has ever owned a motard and used it as an around town ride please give your experiences. and if i do end up having to get rid of this bike i will probably be buying a Duc Monster. so anyone here with an opinion on that as well would be great.
