Another reason to wear your gear
I just thought of this last night after a couple cold ones.
Being a motorcyclist offers one a chance to wear some protective stuff that would be totally unwarranted and perhaps illegal if you were just wearing it on the street. There is a self-defense aspect to motorcycle gear that we rarely talk about.
For example, gloves. Let's take the TiMAX gloves from ICON, my personal fave. Imagine hitting someone with these? Not too far off from brass knuckles, which are illegal in most states as far as I know. If you found yourself in a sticky situation at a bar, a couple knocks to the head (or any hard part) of a would-be attacker would help you get out of trouble.

Armored jackets would come in handy too. Imagine someone swinging a pool cue at you while you are wearing a fully armored jacket. Blows to the back and shoulders would be softened considerably. And you could block things coming at your head pretty well, since your elbows and forearms - the things that get hurt the most when blocking an attack - are protected.
If you were wearing riding boots, your potential is even greater. Who cares about proper form when you can boot someone in the shin with footwear designed to save your feet from being severed? Like most gear, this presents both offensive and defensive advantages. Kicks to your shins will be somewhat negated, and your kicks will be magnified.
And of course, if things get really nasty, you can put your helmet on. If you are not concerned about fair play - ie. someone is really trying to hurt you or someone you care about - just putting on your helmet would make you nearly invincible. Head butts would be pretty effective, too.
Has anyone ever had to test these hypotheses out in real life?
I am somewhat comforted by the protective potential of my gear, especially on the road where motorcyclists are always a hair away from making some depressed, self-loathing person chase after them with a car. Ever since I had a road-raging cager chase me up and down Rte. 7 at truly dangerous speeds, I try to wear gear that could protect me in case someone like that has a golf club or baseball bat in the trunk and intends to teach me a lesson about 'waiting in traffic like everyone else.'

Nice thought, but I don't think it's realistic unless you're confronted at a stop somewhere on the road and already have your stuff on. I don't think telling someone who's ready to bash your face in at a bar to hold on a sec while you put on your armored gear would work.
i like it
a good elbow to the face with armoured elbows would do some damage
it's amazing how creative our minds get after a couple beers... and then how it goes drastically downhill after that.. lol

I've often considered the whole hitting someone upside the head with CF knuckle gloves but I never thought about a jacket. Icon's titanium inserted jacket (to match those gloves i think) could probably stop a bullet
reminds me of one time riding with a group of friends ..
we were down at the waterfront, and our group of probably 8 had gotten together with a group of probly 30 bikers, mostly neweer R6's, Gixxers, CBR's, etc .. overall, pretty damn nice bikes.
Then a car rolls by with 4 or so skinny *** wiggers in jerseys thinkin they're tough ****, start sayin our bikes are POS's and what not. They're saying this to 30+ pretty big guys, all wearing gloves, armor, helmets, etc (a few i knew had concealed weapons as well). They continued to talk ****, but there are a ton of cops in that area, so everyone else it go.
Needless to say, they were ****** retarded.
Back on topic, anything other that fists can still be considered a deadly weapon. If you were already suited up and what not, i dont think that would really be applicable. But if you're in a part, and run real quit and put on a back protector, helmet, jacket with armor, and your metal death gloves, i think they'd call that a deadly weapon

Where did you get yours? And which length do you have?
I was under the impression until recently that they were illegal.

Isn't it funny how that works? You just pass someone, going about your business, and they take it so personally that they put your life at risk just to heal the hurt you've caused to their ego.
I wanted to carry one of those batons, but I didn't know how I would keep it readily accessable. I guess Mr 4age has the answer, though.

I got mine from a pawn shop, and mine is 2-2 & 1/2 feet long. I have never had to use it, but i have pulled it out when being tail gated or messed with and people realize they don't want dents all over their new 350Z.

cheaperthandirt.com should have a few for sale. I'd check local law for carrying one. I believe this was the weapon that took out nancy kerrigan's knee
