Default lower timing belt cover

how important is it that i put the lower timing belt cover back on when replacing the timing belt? I somehow lost the bolts that hold it on. Im worried a rock or sumthin might get up in there sumhow and throw the belt off but i dunno... is it neccesary for it to be on there??
