92 civic hatch gsr or 90 crx?
I posted the other day about b16 vs b18 going into a 92 hatch. Went out and found a GSR swap. Didn't pay for it yet. Spotted a 90 CRX si today for about 1500 with no mods. I've got about 5k to spend. Which would give me a faster (straight line) car with the funds I have?
In the shot run, the CRX is easier to make faster, but in the long run the hatch will be faster out of the better aerodynamics and the fact that more suspension products are made for them. After youve made the power you want thats when the suspension really comes into play, the aerodynamics is only for cars that are in the nines, turning 150+ trap speeds, doubt youll have to worry about that.
92 civic CX w/ the GSR would be really nice! but the CRX is also a good deal. Do what you want....i own a 89..i had a 92 and there is a big diff.so get what you think will make you happy!
I've had owned both a CRX, using a B16 w/a1.9L stroker kit, and now a 92 hatch. The CRX was faster/lighter, but if you want to drive the car daily, get a hatch, it's way more comfortable, easier to deal with. Whichever car you decide on, everybody's got one.
The car's performance will be about the same straight line with the GSR engine.....CRX Si is probably heavier than the 92-95 hatches excluding the Si. with a 2GCRX/4G civic you'll have to get a mount kit for the B series engine, and use a cable transmission (unless you wanna do a bunch and hack up some of your car of work). which means you can't use the hydro from the GSR. so your options are trying to find a cable GSR tranny (rare and expensive), or use a JDM Y1 etc tranny. getting a JDM tranny usually means you don't know the condition, and 8 out of 10 times the synchros are shot and crunch, and the fun part is in knowing you can't replacement synchros for a reasonable price at all. you'll also need to either shim the engine down (very bad), or cut up your stock hood supports to squeeze the engine in. not to mention the fact that the engine is very cramped in the engine bay.
now, that said (and many others left out), it's MUCH easier to start out with a 92+...everything drops right in. but i don't know that you can do it with 5K with a 92 unless you shop around. find a blown 92-95 hatch (1000-2000) and then you have 3-4K for the motor...it'll work out famously....i also don't know that you can do it for 5K on the CRX either though by the time you have to hunt down various parts. game plan- 92+ ...less headaches, much less work required, no worry about JDM transmissions or rough, hard idling motor mount kits
92 hatchie hatch
ask on the CRX forum...they'll tell you the same things i did

Go with the hatch... With a GSR swap, you will be in the 14's... A CRX with a JDM B16, and you will be looking at low 15's... O yeah, the hatch is way more comfy too...
Yes go with the hatch, I have owned both crx and a 92 cx hatch and the hatch was more comfortable and weigh only a little more than the crx, it also has alot more room than the crx, so think about that also. Whatever you decide they are both great cars, good luck

I would go with the hatch. It is slightly heavier depending on the trim level, but it is way more comfortable, and you can seat five instead of two. I was faced with the same situation, but after diving both I picked the hatch. If it already has a GSR motor make sure it is still running good. You don't want a burnt out piece of crap. Some guy tried to sell me a F***ed up b16 in a CRX. It looked all good until I drove it.
A 1992 CX or VX will weigh less than a CR-X Si. 1992 CX/VX weighs only 2094lbs. stock.
Again, the B-Series motors drop right into the 1992-1995 hatchback, and everything looks totally stock. Parts are WAY more abundant for the 1992-1995 hatch, and there is more room in the engine bay too.
Have fun trying to get a B18C1 running perfect in a pre-OBD car such as the CR-X. It can be done, but it's a pain and costs even more money.
I've got a friend selling a GS-R hatch that's bad-*** for only $6,000! Save up a grand more and buy it

Not $5,000 really, but check that link above and $6,000 gets you a totally bad-*** 1992 VX with GS-R motor, seats, new paint, coil-overs, 99 Si wheels with new tires, etc.

You'd have to find a hatch for $2,000 and the motor swap for right at $3,000 just to get started, so no $5,000 alone won't cut it. That's why I say buy that car for only a grand more. You then won't have to waste money just to fix the body and stupid **** because it's already been perfectly straightened out.
