Default CEL code 14 - Idle Control System Malfunction

Hey guys, I was driving along and after I got off the highway I noticed that the rpms were dropping much faster than normal. When I was driving slowly in traffic the car would also jerk at very low speeds. I checked the code afterwards and it read 14. I also pulled 71-74, which are random misfires but Ive been getting those for quite some time. The next time I started the car the revs dropped like normal, and no bogging at low speeds - it did however idle surge sporadically, which it has done randomly for quite some time. My first quess is IAC valve, or vacume leak. What do you guys think?

Im currently going through some idle problems myself which even Honda techs where I work are having trouble with, but I used to be throwin a code 14 as well, I just took off the IACV and cleaned wit with brake cleaner. Theres a screen in there that tends to build up carbon and can clog, try that and see if it makes a difference.

you check you fitv? take your intake off an plug the bottom hole. see if that helps your idle problme. if so..just make a block off plate for the fitv an rerout the coollant lines.

try cleaning your egr also. with some carb cleaner like the iacv

I cleaned the EGR a few weeks ago, after I did I had the idle surge come and go. Then it dissapeared for two weeks and it didnt come back till yesterday.

Ok Im bringing this one back because I haven't solved the problem. I put on my room mate's spare IACV - he replaced it bc it was leaking coolant, turned out it needed the coolant gasket from mine to make it work. We then did the Helm's test where you rev it to 3k rpm until the fan comes on and it did not throw a code then as it did a few months ago when I first started having the problem, so I figured the IACV was fixed. After about a week I got the code again.

How can I check if the FITV is the cause for sure? the first few times I start it after resetting the ecu the idle will surge for a few minutes und then goes to normal. Supposedly this is a sign that its the FITV, however it doesn't do it consistently. I know you can take off the intake and plug one of the holes, but it only acts up rarely. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

it is probably the FITV, just take it off, and the take the back cover off, and turn the wax screw in all the way, then back it out about 5 turns....

see if it still does it after that

now what is this random misfire business all about?? i get those codes when I put the obd2 p14 on my obd1 h22 for inspection time.....i get the random misfire codes if i take the rpms above 3.5k for more than just a sec....

oh in my case, it was my header, it had a small exhaust leak right before the primary o2 sensor. When I put the stock header on they went away for good.

thats weird as hell....i wonder why that would cause a misfire code

i think mine are either due to the obd1 knock sensor or the obd1 distributor...either way it works good enough for an inspection so im happy with it.....

you ever fix the idle problems?

Not yet. First thing Im gonna do is clean the IACV again and maybe see if i can get a new gasket just by itself. Next Im going to see if I can test the FITV, since thats a possible cause for the code. Someone else mentioned checking the wiring and connectors as well, so thats worth a shot. Ill update when I get that far.
