My cousin is looking at a 1990 Accord. It has 16x,xxx miles on it. It only has one owner and he's a mechanic. The owner just put in a new timing belt, water pump, sparkplugs, battery, and changed the oil and tranny fluid and flushed out the coolant system. Brakes are good. The car is in real good condition inside and out. Runs perfect. He is selling it for $1800 firm. Should my cousin jump on this deal? This is just going to be a daily driver. TIA

 

What trim level? Does it have a sunroof?

 

i don't know the trim level...but lets say its a DX 2 door.

 

Sounds a little high for a dx. He is a mechanic tho so the car is probably in excellent mechanical condition.

 

The car is 12 years old with 160k mi on it. Any warranty on engine, clutch or transaxles?

Engine replacements $2500+
Clutch $350+ depending on model
Transaxles ????????????????????

$1800 is not bad if you get a year or two out of it with out major repair.

 

All that stuff isnt really a big deal, besides maybe the timing belt and water pump. If the car is in good shape, with 160k, I'd suggest this:
DX $1500-$2000
LX $2000-$3000
EX/SE $3500 at most!!!!

 

Well..it was picked up for 1500. It is in great shape. The only thing is that it has about a finger length of rust on the rear panel right above the tires. It runs great and strong. Oh ya, it was a 2dr Accord LX.

 

Congrats dude. My car has the same rust spot in the same place. It afflicts many early 90s Hondas.

 

Rust problems are common. Mine is rusting also. 1500 for an LX is awesome! What options does it have?

 

Just tape deck and power windows. Its main purpose is to be a beater. But all in all, I was impressed with the car. Time and time again, HONDA puts out quality stuff!

 

Nothing beats a $1500 beater, especially when its a good 4th gen Accord.

i just found my bud a 4 door 90 lx...with a bad tranny for $500...gonna fix it for him...and I get the 94 ex rims off of it

 

now thats an f'n deal.

 

yup...an accord as a project car wasn't my first choice...but for $500 i couldn't pass it up
