Default Hydrolock? Help!

so i'm sitting at home today and my buddy (CW-ITR-329) calls me up and tells me his R just broke down. its raining and he thinks its hydrolock. he has an AEM CAI without a bypass valve and he tells me that he drove over a small puddle but not a three foot deep puddle either. well apparently after he drove over this puddle his R started to bog pretty bad so he let off and the thing just shut down. he tried to start it, but to no avail. is this hydrolock? is his R salvagable? i appreciate any insight you guys can give me.

If a car hydrolocks, it does just that, locks. The water gets into a piston, and since water is incompressable, it won't allow the motor to turn... He prolly got water in the distributor... have him take it off, and dry the rotor, and plug wires and stuff. Use like a hair drier on the distributor and stuff...

Edit: I really need to learn to spell...

It takes 2 cups of H2O to hydrolock a motor (AEM says so?) the rest is burned off when the motor fires
I would do what was previously said and pray for the best
good luck

Ok, after working for 6 hours I went back to my car and turned it over. It started fine and all, but it is throwing a lot of black smoke out of the exhaust. Is it just burning the water out? Ryan

stop using bacon grease to lube your valve cover gasket and the black smoke will disappear!

I'm just kidding.

white = water.

black... oil?

white=coolant,water
blue = oil
black = partially burned fuel (too rich)

alright, for all of you who are interested in this problem CW-ITR-329 is having, here's an update: this morning, he started the beast up and let it idle for a while then he took it for a spin. no more smoke and it runs fine! now, he's prolly gonna replace his AEM CAI with a comptech icebox to completely eliminate the possibility of this happening again. what do you guys think about this?

I guess you can take out the plugs and see what they look like, or blow all the water out from the chamber with the plug out

Do a compression check and it will tell you everything.

Wow, pretty much that same thing happened to me a week ago, minus the black smoke. It was just a scare, but it was enough for me. Bye-bye AEM, hello DIY stock icebox.

You should do a compression test though. It's easy.

Buy a compression guage at any auto parts store. It screws into the spark plug holes.

Remove all the spark plugs, and disconnect the plug wires from the distributor. Spray some WD-40 down the spark plug hole. Screw the compression guage into the spark plug hole, and have someone hold the throttle all the way open and crank the engine over until the needle stops climbing. It will hold at the highest reading. Repeat for each cylinder, and write down the readings.

I've had AEM intakes for four years now.

Nothing remotely like this happened to me....until last week.

I too have driven through puddles before, many worse than the one that gave me such a scare. I couldn't believe what was happening, and the truth is, I don't know whether I got my distributer wet or if I may have sucked up just enough water to extinguish combustion, but not enough to actually lock the motor.

And I don't care.

My stock "cold air box" seems barely to have lost any power vs. the AEM, and that's with a crappy, old, stock paper filter. Once I drop in a K&N I suspect I'll have just as much power as before. And it's nice not having the extra noise.

And I'll not have to worry about hydrolock ever again.

Just wondering, why do you always post for your friend? Why doesn't he post about his own car?

That was my car, CW-ITR-329. And if you look above, I have posted 3 times in this post already. He has a Turboed Saturn that runs consitent 13's. There are no GOOD saturn boards so he posted and learns here. Give him break.

One of you Honda Tech "engineers" needs to come up with something better than the gay *** bypass valve. Maybe some sort of plastic sheet with holes in it but somehow not affecting air flow but stops water entry. HMMMM To bad Im not an engineer or Merlin the magician!
