i would say b18 because it has a bigger displacement but, ls vtech are expensive to build right and if you dont then boom goes you enginge.

wtf?

i think he was asking about which head to use,i'm not 100% sure but i think the GsR head yields 0.2 more compression than a B16! but it all depends on what all u plan on doin to the motor N/A or bOOst!!

no.

It has to do with the bottom end mostly the rods and rod bolts.

I have shotpeened polished ls rods and arp bolts i spin to 8500 no problem.

Vtec controller = wak.

b16 head, cheaper, easier to find, and actually flows slightly better than the b18 head. There's dyno charts on HT that show the difference, but really which ever head you can get for cheaper. I paid $550 shipped for a complete b16 head off ebay(alot of aftermarket crap came with it). Look to pay around $400-$600 for a head depending on how complete, mileage, wear, aftermarket parts etc....

ls vtec is a b18 bottom end and a b16 head. if u put a b16 head on a b18 u get high compression. if u put a b18 head u have basically a gsr and ur wasting ur time.

So if I wanted to have a bit of a play at building an DIY LS/VTEC setup.

Is it at all possible to simply source a B18 block and a B16 head and simply slap them together for a little fun? or is fitting aftermarket components a must?

B16 head is proven to flow better, and a LS-VTEC, is not necissarily "expensive"

A VTEC controlle rwill not make it more reliable, tuning will. A VTEC controller IMO is pointless if you are running a tunable program that allows you to set vtec engagement through the program.

I've seen several stock bottom end LSVTEC setups with built heads make good power and hold up fine.

its oem honda not stock the only thing that is stock that i would really like to change is the rods but i do kind of like the idea of an all oem internal motor that can run a low 13, i do have arp rod bolts just so i can twist the motor a lil higher and not have to wory about spinnging bearing
