need to replace tie rods!

Default need to replace tie rods!

well my tie rods are in dire need of replacement, i think i remember seeing a DIY with picture instructions on here a while ago but i cant seem to find it. if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated, thanks.

just break it loose and then count the number of times you turn it to take it off. Then put the new one on and count the same number of times to thread it on.

yes it can be done with basic hand tools. and if you have the money, i usually do my alignment or go get one done. most likely to be off a bit.

just count how many times it turns when you take it off, then twist the new one on the same # of times.

i would recommend an alignment when your done

i know that is how to remove the outer tie rod but what about the inner? Also my car seems to be making some weird noises, sometime when im in gear it makes this metal on metal scraping/grinding noise, but promptly goes away when i step on the brakes. and when it is in reverse it makes this high pitched mooing noise. the thing that bothers me is that it only makes the noise sometimes so i cant pinpoint it.

ive never done an inner but i think they are basically the same idea, just unscrew everything couting the times you take it off. even the sleeve. then yes you should go get an alignment, but it should be pretty damn close unless the tie rods are different. the noises, is it when you have the clutch in and not moving? are you rolling, if you are not moving and the clutch is in its might be your thowout bearing taking a crap. if the car is in neutral then maybe your input shaft bearing. or just a clutch problem

In theory, yes you are right. I did it perfectly (so I thought) and the alignment was all messed up It's so hard to get it right.

And to the op, you might want to get both inner and both outer for a nice complete steering sys overhaul. And yes you do need an alignment!

no worries about the alignment i have a lifetime alignment at firestone but anyways i tried to look at the inner tie rod today to see if i could get it off but there seems to be no space to get to the inner tierod because the sway bar and other pieces of metal get in the way. also the noise is coming from the brakes. the inner break pad is worn like this |\ (worn alot at the top but, not worn very much on the bottom), is it cuz my rotor is warped? possibly something wrong with the cailper?

EDIT: car is a 99 Si by the way

my guess would be that the piston in the caliper got stuck, or the brake pad was installed improperly.

it could also be the caliper pins sticking...

caliper pins are the things that the caliper slides back and forth on.

I would check these first, may need to grease or replace and grease them

theres a tool that you can get at napa or on any tool truck to remove inner tie rods, it makes it really easy. after you put those on you'll need to go get your alignment right away. your front tires will be draging badly.

man how you know its your tie rod? tie rod is when your steering is fucked up and pulls to one side when your mashing it

i think you are talking about CV boots which are part of your axles

i just did my inner tie rods last night and replaced boots easy stuff
