Default 5th gen manual tranny issues

I am about to buy a 97 ex coupe from my ex-girlfriend. It's a car I know well since I maintained it for the 6 yrs we were together. But in the year since we split up, God only knows what she's done to it. Anyway to the point...The check engine light is on & the tranny doesnt want to go into gear. I'm sure one doesnt have much to do with the other, but these are the issues I'm having. I haven't had a chance to get the code checked, but I will on my way home from picking it up. As far as the tranny issue. Has anyone had this problem? Do you guys think its just low on fluid in the slave cylinder, or more so to do with the clutch itself? I'm trying to get an idea of what I have to contend with when I go to pick it up. Should I just put fluid in it & try to drive it? Or should I get it towed? Any help will be appreciated.

Oh by the way...the car has just over 100K on it & I'm only paying $1k for it.

hmmm....if any of the gears pops out when driving, then u will definitely need a donor tranny or if you want to pay more, a rebuilt tranny.
describe the problem with the tranny.

Well I actually picked the car up today. I had to have it towed due to the tranny not going into gear. When I step on the clutch pedal it goes completely to the floor, and sometimes goes past the point that the spring will return it to the rest position. I checked the slave cylinder reservoir and it was full of fluid. I looked around the res. & cylinder and didn't see any leakage. I definitely think that this is an issue with the hydraulics rather than the tranny itself. Any ideas?

Other than that, it sounds like a hydraulic problem. It might be as easy as bleeding the clutch, or maybe the master has blown seals. The master is the only place where it can leak back to the reservoir. Blown seal in the slave would leak OUT where you can see the fluid.

dont just check the slave cylinder. Have someone pump the clutch while you are looking in the reservior. If it is bubbling over then it is the seal, or the piston inside is f-ed up. But if its not staying in gear, then whoever drove it before, had one pissed off girlfriend. Cause those gears are shot.

low on fluid or messed up synchros. you can try refilling it up with some synchromesh fluid.

do a search for it if you are not familiar with it.

your problem sounds exactly like my previous prelude. The clutch petal would stay on the floor when pushed on it and i had to pick it up with the tip of my shoe to bring it back up. i found out that the master cylinder had a blown seal and replaced the master cylinder and bleed the system with a quart of dot 3. From my experience, its the master cylinder.
