Default No theft insurance - how long until my bike gets stolen?

We should start a pool. Bike is a 2004 SV650. Moving into DC, Shaw/Logan Circle area, so its a decent place considering the other choices, but the bike will be left in a alley. I am guessing it will be chained to a fence or post as soon as I find one strong enough. I couldn't afford the theft insurance, so Murphy's Law is now in effect. Any ideas on how long I will have it before it gets stolen? Closest to the winning date gets the prize of all the stock parts (handlebars, rearsets, etc...)

How could you not afford the theft insurance? Did you just get insurance from the first carrier you called?

Liability on that bike should be like $250/yr. Comprehensive (everything but collision) should be less than $1K.

You've been modding the bike, but you're too cheap to spring for the insurance? Come on dude.

Theft insurance thru Geico raised the monthly payment to $760.00 Progressive would not offer me any insurance at all. Foremost will not offer theft unless it is in a locked garage (and, they noted that any motorcycle theft in DC is investiaged, just in case I wanted to slip it by anyways) Dairyland needed to check and see if they could cover me. State Farm came out to be $3500 a year. The cheapest liability I could find was thru Foremost - at $390 a year.

Why do people knowing put themselves at risk like this? I'd rather take the money for the bike and head to Vegas, the odds are certainly better.

It's risk, yes. But it seems like even with it being stolen, I would still be out ahead $$ wise. Dairyland just rung back - they won't be offering me coverage in DC, theft coverage or otherwise.

Time to sell the bike, or get a cheap bike that you can say goodbye to without a problem. You're asking to take a $4000 hit right now.

This is experience talking.

To be honest, the bike is probably going to stay in my folks garage until it sells, then I might pick up an older Vespa. Although that is going to be just as big of a theft magnet, if not more than the SV. Although word is that Colemans has a damaged Stella Atomic Fireball (LML - Indian Vespa Clone) in the showroom. I might be able to pick that up for a song. Full coverage for that is only $600ish thru Geico.

LOL. If you've been riding the SV, a scooter of any kind is going to suck.

Comprehensive coverage for my Duc is $600/year through Progressive. Something just ain't right here. Doesn't matter though, I think you may have found the solution

His rates probably has a lot to do with the location, records and his credit.

Meanwhile, I'm paying $200/yr for full-coverage on my F4i. Suckas.

Nice seeing you hosers today.

Ceas: Keep the bike so you can ride w/us.

With Brian and you so close to me, and all the Madison pansies now in the area, it has the makings of a fun yet responsible summer.
