Pioneer AVIC-N1
alright guys..who has experience with this unit?
i've heard that you can bypass a lot of stuff on it..but not really too sure what kinda stuff.
it's a nice little DVD/NAVIGATION indash player and i think im gonna buy one..so can you guys tell me all i need to know about it? how you like it? how it performs? quality? thanks!
(I know it has the basic DVD, memory navigation, touchscreen, TRi zone, etc..)

ive heard alot about the bypassing..can you explain?
by bypassing, do you mean wiring it so you can watch movies while youre driving (because a lot of indash players dont allow you to watch movies while the car is in motion)? what other things can you bypass?
and with the N1 being the first of the N-lineup..wouldn't the Navigation be a little outdated?..I heard you can get an update software from Pioneer for $350!!?
also, i know the features of the AVIC-N1..but theres so much hype about it being very user friendly and again, it being able to be easily bypassed. Why would someone prefer the N1 over the N2 or N3 (a lot of people have asked me if I can get my hands on an AVIC-N1..and now that I can get my hands on one, i would like to know about all the hype)?
Thanks for the response lude!

probably the major reason for getting the n1 over the n2 is that it was a lot easier to bypass than the n2. feature wise the n1 and n2 are basically the same. the new n3 seems to be the easiest to bypass but will void your manufacturer's warranty if not done carefully.
from what i understand, to bypass the N3, all you do is flip a switch which is underneath a VOID sticker..am i correct?
and with the N1, its easier to bypass than the N2..but how would you go about doing that? and what exactly does bypass mean? bypass what? Thanks.

Hey..
I had the N2 for a few days and I hated it. I mean, dont get me wrong it is a nice system, its just it didn't look right in my Integra. I just didnt like it because the screen would hit my AC vent, and it didn't appear to have the "clean" look to it. (stuck out like an inch so the screen can pop up.)
Anyways thats all besides my point. What I wanted to say is basically when I had the N2, I was told it was near impossible to bypass. I don't if thats true or not, but ive taken the system to a few shops. One said it had to do with the gyros (spelling?), and was told that since Pioneer was sued due to someone bypassing the N1 and was killed, thats why the N2 came out. I was also told to ground it to system to the parking brake so that it would make the system thing the car was always in park, which would allow the user to run the dvd feature while driving.
After the hassle the N2 gave me, I decuded to return it and get the double din D2. Since the D2 doesn't have the DVD feature, I decided to hook up PS2 (thin) and use that. Unfortunatly as of now, I am not able to play DVDs while driving yet. I seem to bypass the first sensor, but when I drive past 40, the system will throw up a warning on the screen, making me not be able to watch anything. I still have full audio tho. Anyways, as of now, I am in the process of installying a switch beetween the navigation and the ps2, because by me adding the ps2, it somehow throw off the navigation. All in all, I was told that I shouldn't have gotton any of the Pioneers, unless its the N1.
Fortunatly for you, you have the N1 which I was told a lot easier to bypass, meaning that you are able to watch DVDs while driving, and able to still have navigation. I was retarded when I bought my system, not doing any research at the time, and just bought the most expensive thinking its the best. I sure regret it now with all the problems my N2 / D2 has given me.
Hopefully I made things a little clear for you, and if others are reading this, please help make this more clear and help this guy out.

thats some good information White GSR!!!..thanks a lot for telling me about your experience..but you said the D2 doesnt have DVD???...i didnt know this, i thought it did
anyways..i dont have the N1 yet..ive just heard soo much good things about it that im debating on whether to get it or not..and if i do decide to get it..i know this shop that has 1 left, BRAND NEW still in the box with 1 year warantee (i know they were discontinued for a while and i dunno how this guy still manages to have 1 laying around unopened..but he does!)!
the other thing i was thinking about was....i also like the look of the double DIN screen over the flip out single DIN indash players...so if anyone wants a BRAND NEW pioneer AVIC-N1...let me know (serious buyers only)...ill try to get it as cheap as I can

the n1 you have to ground the brake wire
the n2 you have to solder 2 pins underneath the silver sticker on the unit itself
the n3 has a switch instead of soldering the pins on the n2
the z1 you have to turn on and off your parking lights (illumination wire must be connected) when the unit first boots up.
the d1/d2 you must put a pin into the empty slot next to the ground wire on the pioneer radio harness and ground it.
those should be all the ways you can bypass pioneer "all-in-one" units.

haha, oh yea...
anyways, is there someone out there thats sure this works. ive read a couple things on some forums that say that cutting the sticker and moving the switch work on the N3, but then at 40 MPH or something, the brain realizes through either the gyroscope or the GPS signal that its moving and shuts it down anyways.
true/untrue anybody?
thanks again guys

yea see, im sittin here reading the manual i downloaded for the N3, and its goes into installing the speed pulse signal wire. it needs this to be extremely accurate with the navigation. it also goes on to say "It is strongly suggested that the speed pulse wire be connected for accuracy of navigation and better performance of interlock" . the interlock is the whole lockout thing that im tryin to avoid. well, when i put it in this weekend ill do a writeup and see if this all works. i just gotta find a way to get that sticker off easily...
crap...

just drive 39PMH on the freeway, problem solved
haha kidding..
looks like you're SOL...give us an update whenever possible
OR...you can try to NOT hook up that speed pulse wire..and see how the navigation reacts to it..if the navigation is fine, then just leave that wire off and WALA! you have everything you need

yea we'll see, im gonna partially hook it up and play with all the different solutions people have given me. if none of it works though, there will be a BRAND NEW avic-n3 for sale on here. seriously.
i really want the option to have movies playing while im driving, but im more pissed off that they locked the navigation manipulation feature out when moving. i cant even have whoever is riding shotgun change it...bullcrap

i've hooked it up without the speed sense wire and just the switch, it seems to work fine at high speeds, the spend sense wire from my understanding of the pioneers, is used when the nav unit cannot detect the satellites. your voice prompts will still work w/o the speed sense wire, the only units i know you need to hook up the speed sense wire for the nav are the older eclipses. i've used a knife to peel the sticker back, but only enough so i could access the switch, then i just used a heat gun on low settings and at a distance to get the adhesive warm to stick it back...you have to remember how much heat is omitted from the unit when you play a cd/dvd, so the unit gets hot, just place the sticker back down and use a small pick to keep it down and apply heat...has worked everytime for me.
dude, you rock.
and we have conformation with the n3. to properly unlock the bypass, you need to remove the sticker, flip the switch, and ground the brake wire.
someone on the other forums was tlakin about newer chrysler vehicles not having a speed pulse wire. now ive read that you really dont need this wire, but id like to since apparently it wont effect the functions.
thanks again guys

which wire are you talking about?
the speed pulse wire is different from car to car, but is the pink wire coming out of the head unit.
id be more than happy to answer any q's anyone has about the N3, as ive sat in my truck for like 10 hours now navigating all the features, and im sure i still dont know half of them...
one incredible feature of the N3 is the ease of which you can change the background. on some of the other ones you have to burn a dvd and replace some of the .pin (background) files, and replace those with ones you want. on the N3, all i have to do is fire in a disk with jpgs on it in size 400x240 and it works! its awsome...
anywho, im gonna go resize my shots of my install and post them up here...
