Default OMG an actual tech question, please help me out...

So here's the problem, stupidly, I went to the dragstrip tonight and may have caused some damage to my car. Here are my steps, I only took two runs so if anyone can diagnose or help to diagnose this problem it'd be appreciated greatly

1) Arrive at strip, take first pass, shifted smoothly, no problems
2) On the way back through after my first pass I went through a big puddle while on the throttle, I have a AEM CAI, car seemed ok, didn't hear anything too obvious at the moment
3) 2nd pass: Grinded 3rd real bad, let off the clutch before I had the gear fully engaged, car went into gear and I finished the pass, also bounced the rev limiter in 3rd.
4) On the way back through car is driving fine until I get to about 3500-3800 and hear a crazy vibration noise coming from the engine bay, sounds like a heat shield, it's only at that rpm range (and it's def. not a heatshield)
5) Car makes the sound whether it's in gear or not at 35-3800, also in neutral w/ the clutch engaged or disengaged it's the same, vtec engages fine and the car drives normally as it would besides the vibration

Any suggestions??? I appreciate it, also sorry for the novel, it's just tough to give a any help without in depth info

sounds like to me that something got rattled lose. the motor should be fine, but if you are want to double check just do a compression test and also a leak dow ntest.

OMG, someone get this guy a prize.

In all seriousness - can you figure out where the noise is coming from? The engine? top/bottom/left/right?

Tweak,
sounds like the sound is coming from the bottom left hand side of the engine bay (if you're standing in front of it). It's not just a small vibration, I wouldn't be posting this if it were, it's loud as all hell. I'm trying not to have to take it to the stealership and get it back w/ 8 more dings and a fat bill. keep the comments coming

im no genius, specially compared to you guys but...

if its bottom left corner standing in front of the car.. then i think that points to the tranny

try having someone rev the car to that rpm range while you take a look under the hood.

Next time you break your car, please don't try to hit VTEC. That just isn't too bright.

Anyway, if it were me, I would pull the trans off and have a look at the clutch.

How many miles on the clutch/flywheel? Is it OEM or aftermarket? If it's aftermarket who's it made by?

If it were the clutch/flywheel wouldn't it not make the vibrating noise if the car was in neutral with the clutch disengaged???

If the clutch isn't disengaging all the way, it could be a cause of your symptoms.

I took it to be a clutch problem, since you noted that you grinded the trans when shifting to 3rd. If it's not a clutch problem, then you need to learn how to shift.

Other vibrations.. yeah, i had those too.. I grenaded a bearing in my transmission and 3 others were messed.. how? DRAG RACING! :D!!

Have some one make the sound and get under the car and find it. Pretty simple.

Yeah, you're probably better off starting with this (it's the cheapest place to start).

If you broke off a piece of the clutch/tranny, it could be making the noise, but I would start with the easier stuff first.

I vote heatshield, ive personally experience the same thing. They just kinda like to get in the way lol. Stock exhaust i presume? If not that then check the clutch although 1 grind in 3rd shouldnt mess anything up, ive had plenty of grinds ect and I just recently pulled the tranny off for a fd install, checked everything and it looked new (80k miles). You should be ok

I agree if you dont have to be moving to make this sound you should be able to find where its coming from. If your to lazy to jack up the car then just pop the hood and listen..........
