HF 5th gear
I've searched this and read some about it, i plan on putting the HF 5th gear into my si tranny. What else do i need besides the gear itself?? all my gears are good right now, syncros are great. will i need any other parts to make this work? I was also thinking about changing gears 1-4 with ZC tranny gears, what do you think about this??
i think its a good idear for mpg and a lil top speed. i have been procrastinating to do this for a while, i was going to use si1-3, dx 4th, and hf 5th

5th gear is actually 2 gears - one on the mainshaft and one on the countershaft

im trying to split an old D16 transmission that i have laying around in the garage right now, i have it split about 3/4 of an inch right now and it wont budge anymore, is there something that's holding the two halfs together besides the bolts on the outside?
you dont have a helms do you?
you need to take care of the snap ring first. take off the plug with a 3/8" drive ratchet at the end of the tranny. use a snap ring plier to open the ring and then you can fully separate the bell housing.
heres a hint, push the housing completely shut again and then try it the right way. what youve basically done by opening it about 1/4-3/4" is just push the bearing up but the snap ring is still holding the bearing, the snap ring wont be able to open enough and stay open. dont try to open it if youve already opened it 1/4 inch. hold the snap ring open, then tap around the bell housing.

bingo times two.... the only difference between the si and dx tranny is the final drive gear, so what I would do if I had the time and ability, would be to swap in that hf 5th gear, and put in the final drive gear from the si or zc tranny.

uh... negative bingo.
(DOHC) ZC tranny has the same final drive as DX. gears 2-5 are all different.
SOHC ZC has the same Si gearing and final drive, well, its the same thing really.
