newbie question, dumb question, whatever, please help
this may sound dumb.....but i just got my first bike. and i'm abouts to be done breaking it in. but i have never work on a bike before. and i don't want to take it to the shop. i prefer doing it myself. so....how do i get the oil filter out. do i need to take off the farings? please give me real good, clear steps on how to do this. and if ur gonna hate....go to the next topic.... thanks guys......
what bike? the filter is on the front of the transmission down low right behind the front wheel. So most bikes this requires taking the lower fairings off. If you're lucky this bottom section is relatively simple to get off. You're even more lucky if you have a naked bike (but if you do tsk tsk for not finding the filter). Might I recommend getting a good oil filter wrench too. I hand tightened my last one on but for the life of me couldn't get it off by hand and none of my friend's car oil filter wrenches fit the smaller bike filter....

You don't have to take any fairings off if it's a 600rr.
600rr.net if you haven't already been there.
I'm assuming what #9 is assuming.

Yeah that's right, you and your bottom-fairing-less self can go elsewhere!

There IS something on the bottom.
To the OP, when changing your oil filter, be sure to put something over the exhaust pipes so you don't get oil all over it. And be sure that the oil is completely drained first, before attempting to remove the oil filter (a little bit of oil will still trickle out).

Pffft. If you're a cheap-a like me, forego the $5 wrench and a trip to Checker's and just use duct tape.

I just changed the oil on my 600RR two weeks ago.. it really isnt that hard. You dont have to take the fairings off, but I did anyways just to give myself a little more room. Just drain the oil, take the filter off, put oil around new filter seal, put on new filter, torque oil plug to spec, fill with 3.1quarts of oil and you're done! I checked my sparkplugs while I was at it so mine took a little longer. Pretty easy thing to do though.. the hardest part was finding the oil filter
I used a cresent wrench to take the old filter off btw..
just be careful because you only have one chance before ruining it and being f[/b]ucked.

Not to drain the oil. But you'll want to be able to keep the bike upright (a stand would work, but so would a friend to hold the bike steady) when adding oil.

you don't need a stand, but you might want to put the front/rear/side stand on 2x4's so you can get the height clearance to fit the oil pan underneath.
i just bought a stand since i'm going to be doing work on mine as well.
