Did i get ripped off.. Piece of stainless..?
So i bought a piece of 304 stainless sheet metal... (to build some ductwork for my angle'd rad). Its aprox 4.5ftx3.5ft, its 18ga, and weight's 10.3kg's.
I got it from a local metal supplier, they charged me $65 cnd for the piece.. + tax.
I would have used alum.. But i can weld it myself.
So is this an average price? Im not really sure what the going price of stainless sheet metal is.. Its such a small piece, i thought they would have just been nice and charged me what scrap is worth for it.. Bastards.

That's a small piece that should be considered scrap?

I'd say that's a far price for that much stainless steel, you have to remember that steel prices are at all time highs.

They use to charge me an arm and a leg for things and the price would vary every week, hell price would vary depending on what person I talked to.

Remember that when buying stainless sheet the thinner it gets the more expensive it gets. Also if you're not buying a standard size you are going to pay more due to "wastage" and sheering costs. I don't know what $65cdn works out to be in us dollars so I wouldn't be able to tell you if that's a fair price. Was it standard 2B finish?

Im assuming so... Nothing fancy.

it's $60 USD give or take a dollar (as of recently). the canadian dollar is smoking hot these days. too bad you dont sell to Canada.

22# / $60 = $2.73/# <-- That number is high for a full sheet...but $60 is a pretty good deal for a cut piece of 18ga sheet. Many sheet metal houses will charge $100-150 lot for the piece due to the wastage (unless it's a "rem").

We're working on it.
Back in the day we used to ship material to ANTARCTICA (no joke..it was to a science research facility)!! So in the next month or two we'll start shipping internationally again.

I bought 500lbs of 18 and 22gauge cutoffs (various sizes) for 495$ US 3 years ago...
The most worrisome part was getting 500lbs of Stainless 200+ miles is the back of may civic... My suspension had an extra 2" drop in the rear

Stainless is pretty spendy....one way you can check to see if it really is stainless is to see if a magnet sticks to it... if it does, then it isnt stainless steel.

400 series stainless and some other "super alloys" have magnetic properties.

All stainless alloys are made with iron. However, 400 series contains more carbon and zero nickle compared to that of the 300 series which contains lower carbon levels, nickle, and chromium.
