1989 Civic DX Hatchback High or up & down idle at stop
Hello all. I have been reading about this in the groups. I recently purchased an 1989 Honda Civic DX Hatchback. The check engine light comes on, so I checked the ECU for error codes. It was showing error codes 1 and 7. 1 being the Oxygen sensor, 7 being the throttle angle sensor. I replaced the oxygen sensor. I tried searching the Internet for a replacement Throttle Angle Sensor, but I have not been able to locate one. Any suggestions as to where I can find one? Secondly, I don't know if I even need one...My symptoms are this....When I am driving in town, and I come to a stop (5speed), with the clutch in or in neutral, the engine either tends to idle high, or surge up & down. If the engine is idling high, I can usually give the gas peddle a quick tap and make it idle down, but then it usually starts the idling up and down thing. Please help! Thanks in advance!

if u can get specs check the coolant temp sensors. three of my friends preludes reved up and down.checked the coolant temp sensor and it was bad all three times. easy cheap fix. if u cant get the specs just let me know and i will look them up on alldata tomorrow. i can have them 4 u around 5ish.
sounds like your TPS is taking a dump..take the volt meter and check it..it should read 4.5 volts at WOT...taking it off is not that hard..just take a dremel to the headless screws(2 of them) make a cut and use a flat headed screw driver and un screw it...you should find TPS sensors here in the classified area for cheap..
It is somewhat funny you should mention the temperature sensor. Not really funny..but here's what I mean. I just replaced the temperature switch, which cuts on the cooling fan. It was broken...and not very easy to get to I might add. This switch was not very expensive, but it was underneath the intake manifold, in between the alternator and the oil filter. Had to get to it from underneath...Oh yeah...and I learned to not to try to remove it after the car had been running...OUCH!...anyway...I got it replaced..low and behold the car has a fan that runs when sitting in traffic or in a drive-thru restaurant. I have never owned a honda before. I bought this car a few weeks ago and have been making repairs to get it running right. So far I have replaced the O2 sensor, PCV valve, Alternator(that just up & died last Thursday), and a new muffler (had factory original...17 years is a good life!). Anyway...I know the temperature sensor is different from the switch. Not sure where it is located on this vehicle. I do not have the specs nor the knowledge to test it. Any help would be appreciated.

i don't remember where it is at 4 sure. on my 91 si and my friends h22a and b21 all of there coolant temp sensors r on the side of the engine below the distributor. at 70degress the resistance should be between 2000-4000 ohms.
