Default Tensioner....I don't get it

The tensioner on my LS has two holes in the backing.....
The one on the left is for the spring but what do you do with the one on the left?

There's a threaded hole in the block that lines up with that hole but I don't remember a bolt being there originally. Does anyone know for sure??

There's a pin on the black that the hole is suppose to slide on. it's the pivot point for the tensioner.

Hmm...I think I might be using that pin to hold the spring. Does the spring hook to a similar pin?

Could I use a small bolt to hold the spring?

The spring goes to another pin, but it's notched. there's a solid non-notched pin the tensioner slides onto. the only bolted part of the tensioner is the center hole. I believe it's a 14mm head bolt.

Bad to run without the retaining pin as long as I have that 14mm bolt torq'd properly?

i dont think the spring is stiff enough to save your engine if it happends to come down to it. so yeah i think its fine to run with out the spring.
