ls vtec budget build
After 6 months of research I've decided on a N/A ls vtec motor. This is a list of what I've pieced together so far:
B18b block
GSR gridle and caps
ITR pistons on ls rods with balanced crack
ARP rod bolts
ITR oil pump
GSR water pump
GSR head w/ITR cams and valve springs/retainers
Skunk 2 mani
GE head studs
Clevite bearing kit
Ls tranny
Plans include:
Block machine work (hot tank, deck, hone, line hone)
GE ls vtec kit
P28 ecu chipped tuned w/uberdata
Nology wires
MSD
Comptech headers
Rs-R exhaust
Port/polish
That's my basic build. As you can tell it's on a budget.
My goals are to build a mild performance/reliable engine that I can be happy with for a long time. I don't really have any horsepower goals but I want to squeeze out every little bit that I can. I'm not going to ask the 200hp question, but what do you think of this set up? Also, would you ditch the rods and pistons for performance ones? I have probe rods and nippon oversize pistons in mind.
I have money to buy anything that I need, but I don't think its necessary to spend on something thats not going to be a big gainer.
Help me out! Do you see anything grossly wrong with the way that I'm heading? I'm open to any suggestions.
Also, should I pay to have the bottom end assembled or do it myself?
Thanks and this is an awesome forum

I got the ITR pistons and rods with balanced crank all together. Is there any issues with changing the pistons or rods?
Also, concerned about c/r. Would 91 octane be ok with pr3 pistons with gsr head?

When using the p73 pistons on pr4 rods, you will have to get the rods/pistons machined to fit. the narrow end of the rod wont fit into the wrist pin area. If you use the pr3 pistons, than you dont have to get any machine work done to pistons or rods and have basically the same set-up. I beleive that the p73 pistons yeild a slightly higher compression than pr3's, maybe by .1 or so... correct me if im wrong. and they come with the cool coating on the skirt
91 should be alright, what are you tuning with?

PR3s make more compression.. around 11.5:1 with PR3s and a GSR head.. I believe P73s put the CR somewhere in the 10's.

Hey, what compression calc are you using? Are you sure? If you run ls crank/rods with JDM ITR's on a GSR head you will only be in the 10s? With all these screwed up calc.'s its hard to learn sometimes!

This is pretty damn accurate unless you're trying to figure out a CR with CTRs

That was actually the one I was playing with.. maybe Im not doing it right, but Im getting around 11.5... Did you double check those numbers? Im probably wrong, but if I am, I need to know why (Ive got my learners permit for motors). Thanks
JDM ITRs in a b18b with a GSR head will net you about 11.6:1, that's the setup I'm going with in my LSV, and USDM ITRs in the same block will set you at about 11:1. I got those numbers using the C-Speed calculator, and I've been doing about a year of research on it, so I'm pretty confident in those numbers.
Yes, thats what I was getting as well. My set up is similar. Basically:
B18C1 block
LS crank/rods
JDM ITR pistons
GSR head
and tons of other goodies..
I was second guessing what Ive been building, thanks for your input man

sounds like a good street set up. my budget set up is very similar to yours.
ls block, usdm o/s p73 pistons, stock ls rods & crank with arp rod bolts & acl bearings
my head is a mild port gsr with the basic bolts on and CTR cams and im running a b16 non lsd tranny. tuned with just a garbage apex vtec controller good for 191 whp and 139 tq on a dyno jet and through a exhaust. at the track my car runs 12.9 all day on slicks
