pct in a stock b18c5
Hi to all of you because im new here.
I just put pct's in my 98 usdm itr and I wonder if it should be ok to run them with stock valvetrain. Of course I will get it tuned (probably hondata) at 94 octane but I just want to make sure I wont get any ping.. Sorry if this question sounds newbish to you but ive been trough all the threads and nobody ever talk about them with a stock valvetrain. The only engine mods I have is a full spoon header/exhaust and a cometic bigger than oem size headgasket so my cr ration should be close to 12.2-12.4:1
Thanks

the stock ITR valve springs and retainers are just fine, unless you want to rev it higher than the stock rev limit or fuel cut.
you should get some bigger cams (higher lift, longer duration) though to make use of the 1.5-2 full extra points of compression, 10.6:1 to 12.0:1 or higher.
You also need some fuel tuning to compensate for all the extra air you are flowing. I wouldn't recommend pushing it hard on the stock ECU map. you could very well blow it up.

Why would you put such high compression pistions and decide to keep a stock valve train? Put in some good cams that will take advantage of it and actually produce power. BC4, SKP2, M24x, JUN3 come to mind. And of course with such aggresive cams you will need to upgrade your valve springs and retainers.
Edit: Im actually talking about things that don't matter. Nevermind me..</TD></TR></TABLE>
Yes, you are.
But to answer your question, perhaps he needed the pct's to get the car in running condition but doesn't have the money to spend on the cams, springs, etc at the moment.
Plus, you can run stock ITR valvetrain with larger cams (Toda B's, etc), you just don't want to rev it all that high (read: past 8500).
And stock ITR retainers are good for aftermarket cams too. Ti retainers are fine, just inspect them often. I would personally use stock retainers because I'm too lazy to bother with the Ti retainers, even coated.
I'm not telling anyone whether or not they should use Ti retainers, do what you want, but you can use the stock ones just fine.
