Default P1259 "Manufacturer Specific Powertrain Trouble Code" ~ VTEC being bad

'98 GSR, 140k miles, I was at about 7k rpm in 2nd when all the sudden a feel a slight jolt and then the check engine light comes on.... I looked up P1259 and it is the VTEC trouble code. This sucks.
I cleared the code and decided to rev a little today to see if it wasn't a glitch; but after getting up to 6500 (VTEC fully engaged if i'm not mistaken) the light came on again.
My question is, what the hell should I do? Should I not be revving up to VTEC at all, so nothing above around 4400... I am confused. I'm not car savvy so I'm gonna have to pay someone to do something.
I just don't know what the hell went wrong. The car's all stock, and I don't drive it especially hard.

One other thing - I'm losing more oil than makes sense. I think it's eating about a quart a week. It's not leaking anywhere I can see, and there's no way I'm burning THAT much. Any suggestions? Last time I got the oil changed they said I should flush the engine because the oil's coming out dirty. But that doesn't explain this rapid loss of oil.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Here is a possible remedy. Check your VTEC cylinoid. It is next to the distributor and will have a couple wires running to it. There are 2 or 3 10mm bolts that need to be taken off to get the cylinoid off the head. When you pull it off there is a filter (a metal screen) with a gasket around it. Check to see if there are any metal shavings in there. If there is clean it out with brake cleaner. (I think brake cleaner is safe) Your bearings could be shot or going bad if you see metal or metallic color in the oil.

As for the second question oil consumption is fairly normal for Honda's with VTEC. 1 quart of oil a week is a little more than average though . Pull your spark plugs and check for oil on them because your rings could be bad too.

Have you ever over-revved your car?

I've not over-revved the car. But I am the third owner and I bought it with 130k miles, so who knows. I don't think it's happened though.
I talked to Acura and they said the VTEC code came on because I had low oil. Which is true, I had really low oil at that time I was trying to be in VTEC, then it shut down - which makes perfect sense because one of the requirements of VTEC is having proper oil pressure.
But the rapid loss - I was told the engine or some of it needs rebuilding - the rings are bad because the oil is just spewirwr03ing through them or something I don't remember all the tech-babble.
So basically I need some of the engine rebuilt? It's a lot better than putting in oil as often as I put in gas.
