low on oil is a common problem???
i'm just wondering if this is crap, or if the service guy from the dealership is really telling me the truth on this one. i bought my 2000 s2000 a few weeks ago. they did an oil change before i took it, and a couple days ago when i brought the car to be serviced it sounded like it had a little bit louder of a valve train. i asked them to look into that for me and when the guy called me back he said it was down a quart and a half of oil. he then said i need to check the oil just about every time i get gas cause these motors are so high tuned and the piston rings as so thin it just uses the oil. has anyone else heard of this before? is this really a common problem in these cars, or is this guy just making this up? i just want something to back it up with if i tell the guy he needs to fix something or if i should just keep a quart of oil in the trunk.
thanks!
thanks!
yes it burns oil, there's a service bulletin flowing around perhaps someone post it.
i never burn more than a quart within oil change(3000Miles), mine has 93k and vtec everytime i drive it

Its kind of ironic that you posted this I had my oil changed about 2500miles ago. I checked my oil last night and my oil is down about a 1/2quart to a quart. But then again I beat the Sh*T out of my car everytime I drive it. And yes they do burn oil but a Quart and 1/2 seems like alot. It could be when it was changed It was filled all the way.
i would think the older the car the worse off it will be, these things happen with used cars. i bought mine new(2005), and there is little burn off, i drive up and down the mountain i live on everyday and rev it high when i drive, but i dont always do a lot of higher speed driving, maybe that has an impact.
u might want to use different oil. u can buy your own, by law they have to honor the warranty if u change your own oil(its your right) plus its a 2000 so i wouldnt worry about taking it to honda for oil changes. but you might want to ask somebody about your gaskets, because who knows what the first guy did, what any of us do to our cars.

I guess i have alot to do with the break in period, if somehow the seal and ring didn't get seated right during the breakin period, it never will.
BTW I am using Valvoline Maxlife(i think it's the syn. version) and it's burning less oil than regular oil that i use

fyi, mobil 1 burns off at an accelerated rate compared to other syn's.
It's normal to experience oil loss between oil changes if you drive this car "sprited"

i did take it to an autocross on sunday before bringing it in to service. when i asked the guy what kind of oil was in the car he told me just regular 5w20, not a synthetic. i always thought the s2000 came with synthetic from the factory. and as far as the oil changes and service to the car, once they get this thing inspected, it's never going to see this place again. i will be doing most of the work myself, or my mechanic will be. the car has 64k miles on it. should i switch to a 5w30 instead? should i be using synthetic in this motor, or would it be better to stick with the sae 5w20 that the service tech says is in it?
honda is a joke sometimes, i went in when my car was new and asked what kind of oil they use, they didnt even know. they told me that the honda oil is made by mobil, but couldnt tell me if its syn or not, then when i went in for my 3rd or 4th oil change, they charged me $10 extra because the s2000 needs special oil which costs more. so i guess they forgot to put the s2000 oil in the first 3 times?
wheni drive on hondas oil i smell it burn when i go up the mountain i live on, when i bought mobil 1 syn i never smelt it. i know mobil one full syn used to be really highly ranked, what oil is best now? or are they all similar?

AMSOIL, Royal Purple, Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec. There are oils made by tuners such as Top Secret, Kaaz, HKS, but people who use those are far and few, so getting feedback is almost impossible. If Mobil 1 works for you, stick with that.

Really? I have never noticed this in my previous car. I used Mobil 1 religously before finding Neo synthetic. Do you have any explenation for this Vapor? Mobil has always been good oil to me. I am doing the switch to synthetic this weekend. I don't know If I am going to go with Mobil1, or shell out the cash for Neo

Save your cash and run the Mobil, neo is overpriced unless you can get a deal on it and it's readily available like mobil. I don't have a scientific based explanation on mobil burning off faster other than experience gathered from myself and other usual track guys ranging from vette, bimmer, VW, and mercedes.
I personally use redline 10w30. I get an ok deal on the stuff. Most motorcycle shops sell it.

I see. I do get very good pricing on Neo, and it is redily available to me. Obviously it will be a little more money no matter what. I also Like The fact that Neo has very good detergent in it, that cleans your motor very well. I may have to use mobil 1 for this next oil change, but I will most likely change to Neo after. ..So Maybe I will compare oil consumption.
