How do they get a head this clean? Chemical , vegetable, mineral?
I just got a valve job done on my spare head, and assembled with SS valves, seals, and Crower VS's and Rets. My question is, how do they get the head this clean? It looks like it is brand new, and almost looks like it is painted with a metalic silver paint. Can you guys tell if this is just clean or if it has been painted?

Mmmm... fresh from the machin shop!
I love when I first take the parts out of the machine shop bag. Nice and purdy!
But yeah, to answer your question, the machine shop just used a parts washer, or "hot tank" as some call it.

The mating surface looks perfect, and it sure didn't look that way when it went in. They didn't charge me for a mill, so I don't know how they got it to look so nice. I just can't believe how nice this head looks now.
Now when I start the rebuild on my engine, the crank, pistons, and rods will be the only work needed to be done by the machine shop. So the turnaround time should be a day or two, so the rebuild project should only take a few days. Can't wait.
Now, to buy or rent a hoist, that is the ?

Machine shops can do amazing things...if they are good. That head looks pretty good, however a lot of times they will just hot tank it, get it clean, and let unsuspecting customers think they did a lot more work than they really did.
