dumb question, but im a noob and am without an owners manual. i pulled into my driveway last nite and there were about 4 or 5 black boxes filled up on the left of the speedo. it said reserve, wasnt on the whole way home til i pulled in the driveway. heres my question, when those boxes run out, are you out of gas or when they fill up you are out of gas? either way im gettin gas today, but i was just wondering for future reference
That's your reserve meter...it turns on when your "main" tank is out of gas....when all the bars go down, you're out....whenever my reserve comes on, I look for the nearest gas station....
If you really want...just ride your bike close to home when the reserve comes on and try and see how many miles you can get before your bike completely runs out....You can have a friend follow you or something with some extra gas once you're done so you can fill er up and make it back home.

Also, a good habit that i got in to was to always reset my tripometer when i fill up so i can guage how many miles i have left based on how many miles i know i can go.
For instance, i've gone 75 miles on my current tank, and I usually go about 130-140 (sometimes all 4 bars are blinking sometimes only a few, depends on gas mileage).
