Default 1999 Hatchback VTEC?

Hi Everyone, I'm new to the forums.. and still relatively new to the tuning scene. I was wondering.. being in search of more power for my car (1999 Civic Hatchback), is it possible to install VTEC on my b16a7 engine? Or is this solely for DOHC engines?
I dont have the greatest understanding of these kind of things which is why im here.

I wish they had an SI for the hatchbacks 99-00 ...

Also any other suggestions besides intake and exhaust system/larger exhaust pipes and iridium spark plugs (these are all already done) to help me gain some speed? i would love a turbo or an engine swap but being a student my income level is sad. lol
Thanks

your engine is a D16y7. You can install a d16y8 head onto your block which is called a mini-me swap (there is alot of info about this on this site. Do some searching for it) It is realativly cheap but not the bigest power gains. You can install the engine that came in the SI or even any 3rd gen integra. These are called b-series swaps. The b16a2 came in the SI, and in the integra, b18b's in the LS/RS/GS/SE, b18c1 in the GSR and b18c5 in the TypeR. These will result in alot more power and better platform to work from however, are rather expensive (2-4000 dollars depending on engine choice)

As far as quick speed, there isn't really that much. Spark plugs are spark plugs and should only be switch if your having problems with them like needing cooler or hotter burn temps. A header will gain a few but is pretty expensive for not alot of gain, expessially if you plan on swaping to something else later. Don't go crazy on an intake, as the diffrence between the ebay ones and $300 jdm Bling ones are maybe 2 hp and a cool sticker. Best advise there is to buy an ebay one and buy a good filter for it (ebay filters are typically ****) Exhausts really don't give that much power and defently don't make the silly mistake that more noise gives you more power.

I have always been a fan of making the car handle well first, then worry about going fast. Buy quality suspension parts like shocks, springs, swaybars, and wheels and tires.

there is no b16a7. there is a d16y7. your not going to gain much power w/the mods you say are already done. for major improvements you have to turbo or swap. hell, to even gain major power from a sohc, you will still need to invest a large amount of money.

losing some weight might help(car weight that is) but, not much. in my opinion, if major power is what your looking for then save. you don't have to buy a whole turbo kit or engine in one shot. part it out, buy pieces of it until you have what you need to accomplish your goal!

It won't give you any more power, but the transmission from the EX or SOHC (EG) Si has shorter gears and final drive and will give you the best performance for the dollar for your engine. Get a lightened flywheel too and a new clutch. I bought the tranny, flywheel and clutch for about $350 and it made a HUGE difference on my 8V 95 CX.
