CLUTCH Problem...... I think??????!
OK i have an 01 Suzuki GSXR 600... this is my third bike and first one i am having problems with as far as the clutch goes... It unloads or slips in 6th and 5th gear on the HIGHWAY every now and then... scares the SH*T outta me cuz it just seems to lose grip and jerk back and die outta no where.... cruising at a steady speed and steady rpm. At first i thought it was my chain because it was loose but i tightened it and it still does it... I think my clutch is starting to slip but just wanted to see what some of the other riders thought... is it time for a new clutch? The previous owner used to wheelie on it alot so i know i should prolly replace it anyway but is this my problem
no not at all! thats the thing that gets me... daily drivin on the streets SEEMS to be fine... the bike is still really torqey and accelerates fine... its just on the highway when im at a steady speed around 70-80 it will just take a sh*t!
could it be my chain or the sprocket????????
could it be my chain or the sprocket????????
not the chain or sprockets, you would hear a clunking sound and probably notice broke teeth on the sprocket. Usually the rule on a bike (so i'm told) Is once a clutch slips on a bike (with out you sliping it) It's pretty much done with because it's only going to get worse. The same think happened to my firends 99 750, he could still clutch up wheelies in 2nd and 3rd but even just going down the highway and would try to accelerate in 5th or 6th the clutch would slip some. How old are your chain and sprockets also. If you have more than 8k on them I would go ahead and change those out also.
Chris.
Edit: Also check your clutch cable, make sure it's lubed and isn't hanging up.

good info man! thanks... the chaing and sprockets are all oem so im guessing they were never changed.. and now that you mention it when my chain was lose i noticed metal shavings above the shifter near the spring.. maybe i tore up some teeth on the sprocket???
looks like i will be replacing and UPGRADING my chain, sprocket, and clutch then.... any recommendations???

I'm using renthal sprockets, and a EK chain. As for a clutch I reccomend Hinson Racing. Or DP.
As for gears I went up 5 in the rear and 1 down in the front. I only reccomend using renthal because of what I've seen and heard from a few different people. Unless of course your stunting then I would say vortex, but not for everyday riding. Also the chain, make sure it's a rivet link, My friend had a master link brek on him and hit his calf, it took alot of stitches to say the lease. And as for brand of chain make sure it's an o-ring. DID ERV2 or ERV3, or the EK racing chain are both great chains.

i know this doesn't fit with everyone's diagnosis, and i'm by no means discrediting their ideas, but one time my F4i did this to me with only 7000 miles on the clock. It was a long ride (about 2 hours) and the clutch started slipping when i would throttle harder in 5 or 6. I got home, changed the oil (changed brands too, i have no idea what was in there previously) and i haven't had the problem since. Just wondering if the oil could possibly be a factor.

Yes, but his symptoms sound exactly like clutch slippage from wear... As long as the revs are rising when you experience the problem

you know i thought the same thing because its about time for an oil change but i dunno if bad oil would really cause that kind of problem... thanks for all the info guys! keep em coming!
