'94 Sputtering worries
Ok, so I have an issue with my car concerning higher revolutions and I'll try to list as much as I can about it and it's history in the past year. I'm going nuts because I drive 1 hour of highway mileage 5 times a week, and it's very important my car doesn't die.
I have a '94 LX Accord. Automatic Transmission
History (since i've had it):
2005
O2 sensor was malfunctioning and was driven like that for about a month.
2006
Recently the left transaxle rod snapped while accelerating in 1st gear. Fixed.
A few statistics:
167,000 Miles on it.
The car takes about 3 mins of highway driving for the idle speed to reach normal
RPMs.
On the highway I get around 28mpg (need to record a few more times to be sure)
The sputtering became pretty noticable around 70mph, 3000rpm, but it seems to slowly become more noticable over time.Around 80mph it sounds like a consistant hum. Even at slower speeds now, the sputtering is noticable around 2800rpm before shifting gears.
The car seems to accelerate decent at slower speeds but accelerates slow on the highway.

Theirs a similar thread on the same page.

I would start out with the same thing, a basic tune up
and maybe clean the EGR ports.
Or come to think about it, if its a sputter that the tune up and EGR ports don't fix maybe try replacing an igniter in the distributor.

About how much would a simple tune-up cost, getting the things you listed done? I have a very feignt idea on how much engine work usually costs.

This is just what most people do
Spark plug wires -52.38
Plugs -2.94 each
dis cap -21.45
dis rotor -19.50
pcv valve -16.27
air filter -23.13
oil filter -5.97
These are all oem prices.
and fairly simple to do.
so no labor involved.

Just some added info incase any new thoughts come up. But my car just passed the emissions test and was pretty clean, which might be able to eliminate some worries?
Also, how effective would a transmission flush be? I've had the car since about mid '05 and my brother drove it for almost a year before that. I talked to my brother and he mentioned he didn't chang the transmission oil while he owned it.
As for Engine oil, that and the filter was changed about 2 weeks ago, so I'm good on that. The air filter looks very clean. Picking up a small amount of dirt on one side but not much.
Edit:
Something that seems strange but on the 3rd cylinder spark plug, there seems to be a good amount oil in it, and in contact with the wire leading to the top of the boot. I didnt take the spark plug out but I removed the the boot and there was the oil. I checked the others and there didn't seem to be any, and if so, a very miniscule amount.

Oh that's easy enough, all u need to do is replace your spark plug tube seals.
with the plug slightly covered in oil it would cause a misfire or slight sputter.

so do you think that would alleviate the possible noise I'm hearing while on the highway? I know it's obviously not good for my car, but what are the noticable symptoms of something like that happening?

Replacing your tube seals would stop the oil from leaking down into your cylinders and coding your plugs.
Then with your plugs firing correctly will stop the sputtering.
When replacing the tube seals also replace the valve cover gasket, and since one of your plugs was already covered in oil replace all the plugs as well.

I don't quite get this but, im guessing the problem is the miss fire and the symptom is the sputtering u felt.

cool, if that is the resolution to the issue, I will jump for freakin joy. Luckily I have a neighbor who is a mechanic and is going to help me change all of the valve gaskets and other similar parts. I bought the valve cover set.
I really appreciate the help with this, cause since I've been driving a car for about 8months, I'm really trying to build up a knowledge of my car, so I'm a lot more independant.

It seems as though the problem was resloved. The best part is that the car is more responsive on the highway, which great. Also, I noticed at 70mph my rmp are now around 28, or 29.
While my neighbor was messin with the car we were playin with the throttle while the hood was up and he mentioned there was a hole in the vacuum or something like that. Doesn't seem fatal but I take it, it could be somewhere along the intake or exhaust? It seems as though right above the throttle, on the intake there is a strange vibration. Any clues as to where I can start lookin, or what to look for? He mentioned it could take a mechanic almost 2 hours to find out the problem
