Do the shocks and springs. If you can't do them at the same time, do the shocks first, higher spring rates will blow the stock shocks. Also look into getting some good tires, IMO tires make the biggest handling difference. If you don't have an Si, you also want to get a rear sway bar, you can get one from an Si or a DA really cheap. I'm running Tokico Illuminas and Ground Controls, with Falken Azenis RT-215 195/60-R14 on HX wheels. I switched the front and rear springs when I installed them to stiffen up the rear and help eliminate understeer, but the car can be a little unpredictable, very prone to "snap oversteer." Personally I like the setup, I would definitely recommend it.

Hands down......ST rear sway bar. (considering your tires aren't junk)

when it comes down to it i think the best bang for your buck is going to be poly bushings, set you back about 200 for all bushings but your car will feel like it's brand new, everything will be tight and no slop, then you can worry about shocks/springs etc later when your suspension is ready for it. just get under your car, look at the stock rubber bushings, they will most likely be rotting out.

Keep you eye out on the classified section here, as well as ebay and Craigslist.com . I just got a set of brand new KYB GR2 shocks (front and rear) and MonkeyzTek coilover springs for the rear - all for $200. ... I haven't installed the coilovers yet, but have installed all 4 shocks and can tell you that they've made a HUGE difference!

Also, wheels/tires make a tremendous difference. ... but it all depends on how much money you want to spend, and what you're looking to do with the car.

ABSOLUTELY!

Tires can make the difference between a car that handles like a champ and one that handles like a turd. ESPECIALLY on a double wishbone Honda. If you are running allseason tires, you have no right to complain about poor handling. Get rid of those and get real performance tires with stiff sidewalls. Even if you keep your stock 14 inch rims, a tire like the Falken Azenis (available in a 195/60/14) will make a HUGE improvement in your handling - and for less than $300 to boot. If you have been buying nothing but Walmart special allseasons since the day you got your car, you would not believe that a set of tires can make such a HUGE difference - even if you don't touch anything else suspension related!

Someone else here mentioned bushings. This is another way you can greatly improve your suspension. However, if you can't do the work yourself, upgrading can be quite costly.

Tires = true!

I've got the typical suspension work done ex. springs, shocks, upper front, upper rear, lower rear- bars, camber kit, I've got bushing kit but have not put on yet, and when I had 195, 50's on my stock Si rims the car was still a little sloppy.

A lot had to do with the fact that the width was bigger then the stock rim so the car wasn't as stable. You could push the car when parked and it would rock back and forth easily.

Once I put the 205,50,15 Azenus on it made a difference. I know once I do the bushings it will be night & day.

thanks guys, i have an si it comes stock with front and rear sway bar, so the 22mm rear sway would work better? I agree with the tires, I had pradas on my last set up, man that **** grabs when they worm up, they love day time driving when the road is warm.

Thanks again guys.

Without tires the car would slide everywhere with a stiffer suspension. Here is a list of suspension mods ranked from most important to least:

1. Alignment
2. Tires
3. Properly working suspension components (bushings, c arms, etc...)
4. Struts/Springs/Swaybar
5. Chassis Bracing

I probably left out a few things but I think these are the most important, for autox/street driving. Alignment and tires are pretty damn close in importance. It's amazing what a good performance alignment and a set of azenis will do to your course times.

i have those exact same shocks on my car, and ya i got them for like $170 or so off ebay + like 20 for shipping or something.

since its on the topic.... got a suspension question for you honda geniuses....

is it bad to go over railroad tracks at even 40+ with a lowered vehicle on aftermarket shocks/coilovers? everytime i hit a track, my car like jumps, i myself go like 2 inches in the air, pasengers in the back hit their head on the roof, and you can feel and hear a huge bump (hence the track...)

dont understand why the falken azenics are so popular. id think looking into like a yokohama (i think thats what it is) or nitto would be a better choice

That is what is referred to is a lack of suspension travel. Yes it's bad for handling and dangerous. That's what you get when you A) put racing suspension on a street car and/or B) lower the suspension too much.

But you can't use those tires if they are not aligned properly?...

i completely agree that getting your car in good working condition first is going to make everything better and should be at the top of the list. that includes an alignment, or at least making the wheels points straight. and furthermore, considering the age of our cars, the $10 rack end bushing is probably needed to be replaced in all EF's by now and would substantially make a difference in the cars feel.

ive met a lot of ppl, even recently and he knows who he is, that buy new springs and hope to upgrade their suspension when they have completely worn out or even improperly installed parts. like if your rear trailing arm bushing was replaced with poly and its not even the right size and floating with a 2mm gap in the old bushing shell, dont expect a new set of springs to make things any better! so fix whats broke first.

and if youre going to talk about whats the best value in terms of competition, the best thing is always going to be improving the DRIVER first. that will net the biggest gains in competition... but i dont think thats the scope of the question and we're even talking about competition environment. just good ole street driving fun.
