Default What do you think happened? (tranny related)*PICS*

I was getting ready to launch, preloaded the drivetrain, and took off (only at about 4k, not using a 2 step, so 0lbs of Boost), didnt get very far at all before I heard a small pop. It wasnt very loud, but after that happened, I couldnt drive anywhere. I can put the car in gear, let the clutch out, and nothing happens. It still idles the same as it does when it is out of gear. Also, after I called a friend, we put the car up on jackstands, and did the same thing - put it in gear, and let out....nothing. Axles didnt turn. My friend said he thought I may have snapped the pinion gear? Oh yeah, you can push the car fine when it's in gear too. Acts just like it does when it's out of gear. Also, when it popped, there was no grinding whatsoever. Just one clean pop and then it wouldnt work anymore.

RPS 6 puck sprung, 1750lb pressure plate, and Clultchmasters lightweight flywheel. Stock axles. Stock Z6 tranny. D16Z6, fully built.

Any takers as to what popped in the tranny before we pull it apart? I've got one who said the pinion gear broke.

any metal chunks in your tranny fluid? could be your clutch? did you smell burnt clutch when you heard the "pop"?

Didnt smell anything burnt, and dont know about the chunks in the tranny fluid, but there was no grinding at all.

It was basically - revs to 4k, preload, laun...pop. Tha'ts it.

More than likely you broke the final drive(ring and pinion) or an axle.

passenger side axle probably popped out of the trans check that first if not then look further into it with the diff and see if anything is wrong internaly

everytime ive seen someone that broke a final drive, the dif would lock and release and make the car hop, or make a horrible popping sound...it sounds to me like he broke an axle

But even if I only broke one axle, why will it absolutely not go anywhere with it in gear?? Or is it acting like a true open diff, and spinning just that one side?

Haha, or maybe I popped both axles.

Really? Hm. How would that work though, even if the other axle is still good?

That's where I heard the pop from, and I have some grease slung out from the CV boot.

I just dont understand how 1 popped axle will make nothing happen!

10-1 you found your problem there, just pull that axle and check it.

the differential is a torque multiplier...so when you get slip on one side...it transfers the force to the other side. Anything times 0 is still zero...thus why your car wont move with 1 broken axle.

The accords use the rubber plug to set timing off of the flywheel, civics and integras don't have the plug because you set the timing off of the crank pulley. Larry

Well, this might explain why I wasnt going anywhere. I pulled the axle today to find this:

That's the differential that the axle splines go into when you put the axle into the tranny, right? Yeah, it's toast.

So it's time for a new tranny, or get an OBX put in this tranny. I have to figure out which to do.
