Default 95 VX - Rev Limiter is off, coming on too early

I normally don't drive my car hard, simply because with my current engine it's pointless. However today I was merging onto the highway and needed to speed up so I was revving it out. All of a sudden the car felt like it hit the limiter but it seemed to be very harsh, when I looked down at my tach I was only at 5500 rpm's (stock vx redline is 6000.) I checked my oil and it is fine, everything else is in good working order. My first thought was that my larger wheels perhaps could throw the tach off? 500 rpm's seems to be a large margin however. I searched and found some examples, but most of them dealt with too low of oil keeping VTEC from engaging. Any help is appreciated

Edit: I'm pretty sure it was the limiter based on passed experiences, but like I said it seemed really harsh, is there another problem that could potentially be mistaken for the limiter?

Ok then can you check your distributor and cam crank timing? You may have skipped a tooth or two.
Also you could have a clogged fuel filter since you say you don't drive it very hard.
BTW the actual governor RPM is closer to 7,000

no problem. And don't be afraid to get on that thing some. Driving it really easy can do more bad then good. This may have contibuted to the problem to begin with
